Christmas shopping is the ideal time to get the most from your loyalty cards and make your points go further, says money editor Sarah Jagger. But which are worth having?

Tesco Clubcard

How can I earn points?

You get one Clubcard point per £1 spent either in stores or online, or one point per £2 spent on Tesco fuel.

What's a point worth?

Each point is worth 1p if spent in-store at Tesco and up to 4p if redeemed using Tesco’s Clubcard Reward Vouchers depending on which partner you choose. For example, £10 worth of points can be turned into a £40 Café Rouge voucher. You need a minimum of 150 points to receive vouchers.

What's new?

Earlier this year, Tesco unveiled a contactless Clubcard adding Hotels.com and Uber to its list of 400 reward partners. This means shoppers you can access money-off vouchers via the smartphone Tesco Clubcard app to use at the checkout.

How can I boost points?

You can also boost your earning power with either a Tesco credit card (0.25 points for every £1) or mobile phone (£1 per point).

How can I earn points?

You can earn points every time you buy in store or Boots online.

What's a point worth?

The standard rate is four points for every £1 (equal to 4p). However, if you’re aged 60 or over, joining More Treats for Over 60s means you get a whopping 10 points for every £1 you spend on Boots’ own brand items, plus perks such as 25% off a first pair of prescription glasses. You can only use your points if the amount you’ve collected covers the cost of an entire item.

How can I earn points?

You can earn points at over 500 brands including Sainsbury’s, BP, British Gas, eBay and ao.com. The amount of points varies but at Sainsbury’s you’ll get one point for every £1 spent.

What's a point worth?

One point is worth 0.5p – so at Sainsbury’s 500 points is worth £2.50 off your shopping. You can boost their value with ‘double-up’ promotions at Sainsbury’s where you can exchange points for vouchers worth twice their usual value. These can be spent on days out, meals and magazine subscriptions. You can also enjoy a free Cafe Nero coffee with 350 Nectar points – perfect after a hard day’s Christmas shop! Nectar holders can also enjoy 20-50% off concerts and train tickets by checking the app and website.

What can I buy with my points?

English Heritage annual membership for 7,500 points (£37.50) – usually £54 or £46 for a senior.

How can I boost points?

Boost your points by paying with Sainsbury’s nectar Credit Card to earn 2 points per £1 spent in store and on fuel, as well as you regular Nectar card points, and 1 point when spending £5 elsewhere. Find out more at Nectar's website.
