Plus beauty expert top tips on how to choose your shade

If you wear makeup regularly, you’ll already know that finding the best foundation for mature skin really matters when it comes to perfecting your look. The wrong foundation can leave your complexion looking dull and flat and might even make you look older as a result.

However, the best makeup for older women will make you glow, plumping and rehydrating the skin so you don’t look good ‘for your age,’ you just look good.

As we age our complexion can become dryer as our skin produces less oil, which can accentuate fine lines and wrinkles. Dehydrated skin can also lead to a dull-looking complexion. Therefore, it’s important to opt for a foundation that gives a radiant finish and has hydrating ingredients, so it doesn’t sit into fine lines or grab onto dry patches.

Steer away from anything too heavy, as this can make your skin appear flat and dull — we want to achieve a flawless and healthy-looking glow. Choosing a lighter foundation and adding coverage with your go-to concealer for mature skin and favourite bronzer for mature skin is the best way to achieve a natural yet flawless finish. Before you apply foundation, make sure you have a suitable primer for mature skin, as this will create an even base and help it stay on throughout the day.

The best foundations for mature skin

Best overall foundation for glowing mature skinale

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Price: £39.10 (was £46)

This is our top pick for the best overall foundation for mature skin, with many well-deserved awards to its name. Reviews praise the fact that it’s “moisturising but not greasy,” and that it does a good job at evening out skin tone without looking cakey.

The Giorgio Armani foundation is light-weight and silky smooth, with customers loving that it “lasts all day without feeling dry or clingy.” It also has the best shade range on our list, making it the most diverse and inclusive.

The brand is synonymous with being expensive, and this is more of an investment than a spur of the moment purchase, but one reviewer pointed out “It is quite expensive but it lasts a long time if you're only using one pump a day."

It’s suitable for all skin types, comes with exclusive Micro-fil™ technology to help brighten the skin and glycerin to provide better hydration.

  • Available in 40 shades
  • Lasts all day without drying out
  • non-greasy

  • Not super full coverage

Best for full coverage

Power Stay 24 Hour Longwear Foundation SPF10
Price: £12.50

Avon's Head of Beauty, Hannah Lally says, "Mature skin is known for being drier, so opt for a moisturising formula to give you a natural, dewy finish. Light, buildable foundations are great for mature skin, such as Avon's Longwear Foundation, as you can add more coverage where you feel you need it."

This foundation only has SPF10, so do add more, but it lasts on the skin and doesn’t feel heavy. Reviews said it looks natural and blends easily.

  • Available in 33 shades
  • Affordable dupe of Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Foundation
  • Full coverage

  • Low SPF protection

Best foundation for a smooth finishale

No7 Lift & Luminate TRIPLE ACTION Serum Foundation
Price: £17.81 (was £20.95)

You know you can trust No7 for quality products, and their skincare range is often praised for its effectiveness. This foundation is reasonably priced for what it promises — which is smoother-looking skin, thanks to a unique blend of optical blurring and light-reflecting particles, but it offers a matte finish rather than a glow and only has SPF 15, so make sure you use a moisturiser or primer with added SPF.

Reviews have praised coverage and blending ability of the foundation: “I'm 45 and this has a lovely silky feel, covers nice without being heavy if you need coverage but then I suppose layering it would be an option, and it doesn't cake at all. Seems to blend nicely over fine lines.”

But the finish it offers was highlighted: “I would have preferred a dewier finish, this one does go a bit on the matte side for me, but overall a nice foundation to use and will probably continue using for a while."

  • Available in 25 shades
  • Expertly formulated to target fine lines, wrinkles and age spots

  • Low SPF protection
  • Matte finish

Best foundation for all skin tones

Best foundation for all skin tones

Fenty foundation
Price: £27.27 (was £34)

With 50 shades of foundation to choose from, Fenty Beauty prides itself on being one of the most inclusive makeup brands to date. If you're looking for a foundation that stays in place throughout the day the Fenty Beauty PRO FILT'R foundation is worth a try, especially if you’re noticing changes in your skin as you age:

"At almost 40 I have noticed that my skin type has changed dramatically over the last couple of years. I now also have fine lines forming (to be expected), so I went to look for a matte foundation that could last and not gather in my fine lines by the end of the day.”

After trying the Fenty Beauty foundation, the reviewer was full of praise: “A little seems to go a long way and gives a smooth natural matte finish when used with my regular moisturiser and primer. Best thing is it really does last all day."

  • Huge colour range of 50 shades
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Soft matte finish
  • Blurs pores

  • No SPF protection

Best glowing foundation for mature skin

Charlotte Tilbury has a range of fantastic products that we love here at Yours, and this foundation is no exception. It's a light to medium-coverage foundation that contains several skin-loving ingredients to create a glowing complexion and it’s perfect for mature skin, as this review highlights:

“Being a lady of a certain age I have lines, wrinkles and small red veins on my face, I am also a lady who has searched high and low and purchased numerous different foundations to try and should I say "work" with the lines, wrinkles and redness, well, at last, I have found it. This foundation is amazing it glides on, doesn't look thick but still covers so well that it also lasts all day.”

We love the longevity of this foundation, and it really does a great job of smoothing out fine lines. Best of all are the compliments that follow! Price-wise it’s not really a budget buy, but it is a quality buy, and one we think is worth investing in.

  • Creates plumper-looking skin

  • Sheer to light coverage might not be for those who prefer a full coverage finish

Best CC cream for mature skin

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ CreamCult Beauty

If you're prone to redness, then a CC cream (colour or complexion corrector cream) for mature skin is ideal for neutralising skin imperfections and discolouring. A quick makeup product to apply, CC can be applied using the fingertips and feels more like wearing a moisturiser than a full face of makeup.

This formula from IT Cosmetics is particularly suitable for mature skin, with this 60-year-old reviewer saying: “I have the medium shade and it gives me light coverage which I love as I do not like heavy foundations. I have had so many comments from family and friends saying my complexion looks fresh and youthful.”

This CC cream contains hyaluronic acid, which is great for plumping fine lines, as well as offering an SPF of 50. Reviews state that it’s easy to apply and a little goes a long way. It’s easy to see why it’s become a cult favourite in the beauty world.

  • CC cream and anti-ageing hydrating serum in one
  • Brilliant for covering imperfections
  • Great SPF protection

  • Only 11 shades available

Best budget foundation for mature skin

L'Oréal Paris True Match founationLook Fantastic

A high street favourite that has stood the test of time. L'Oréal Paris True Match is a great choice for any skin, but we love it for its translucent coverage, which won't dehydrate mature skin or settle into dry patches and wrinkles.

Reviews mention how easy it is to apply and blend – in fact it if you apply it carefully with a makeup brush, no one will even know you’re wearing it.

“I wouldn't say it's full coverage, but it enhances your skin making it look effortlessly flawless and dewy,” one reviewer said. “It’s a lovely foundation, super soft like silk when applying, blends well and looks flawless. I went for porcelain, and it matched my fair skin very well.”

L’Oréal is a brand that has stood the test of time and consistently produces high-quality, affordable beauty product, with this foundation being one it’s best-loved items.

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation
Price: £31.20 (was £39.00)

The NARS Sheer Glow foundation is praised for “buildable colour, great natural looking texture and lasts all day long,” and we think it’s great at offering a minimal makeup look with a bright, even finish.

It’s suitable for normal to dry skin types, and is also buildable, so you can add more products on top as needed. As one review put it: “Simply the best foundation on the market, and I’ve tried hundreds!”

  • Available in 30 shades
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Dermatologically tested and fragrance-free

  • Not suitable for an oilier skin type

Best foundation for sensitive skin

bareMinerals BAREPRO 24-Hour Full Coverage Liquid Foundation SPF20LookFantastic

The bareMinerals foundation is free from oil, parabens, sulfates, fragrance, and is non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic. It also evens skin tone and is designed for long wear, as reviews have highlighted: “This is the best one I have used, it's full coverage so covers areas of redness and sinks into skin flawlessly with an even finish.”

  • Heat, water and sweat-resistant

Best hydrating foundation for mature skin

Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturising Foundation SPF 45
Price: £32 (was £40)

Classic beauty brand Estée Lauder really delivers with this moisturising foundation that also has SPF 45. It gives a medium-full coverage, blurring imperfections and the appearance of fine lines, to the delight of reviewers:

"I was so impressed with how this makeup covered all of my flaws, blending and matching my skin tone perfectly.”

Its moisturising properties come from a special IonCharged water complex and probiotic technology, so it nourishes skin while you wear it. Many customers have highlighted this in their reviews as well:

“I immediately noticed how moisturised my skin felt upon application, which continued until I washed my face that night."

  • Gives the skin a 'juicy' finish
  • High SPF protection
  • Non-comedogenic
  • Dermatologist-tested

  • May be too glowy for those who prefer a matte finish

Best foundation for combination skin

Best foundation for combination skin

Clinique Superbalanced Makeup FoundationBoots

This foundation from Clinique helps skin to retain moisture, while providing moderate coverage and minimising fine lines. It’s suitable for combination skin as well, which we like as we often find we have dry and oily patches.

Reviews praise its ease of use and level of coverage: “I was matched for a sample in-store and took the foundation away to try for ten days. I like it so much I've just purchased a bottle. It goes on really easily with a brush and blends nicely, it's medium coverage I would say but I think you could build it.”

However, one person did point out that the application isn’t perfect right away, which is worth noting if you’re applying it in a rush: “Don't be scared if initially you see some dry patches of skin still, I find that after about half an hour it settles, and my face has a lovely, slightly dewy finish. It lasts just about all of the working day with powder to set and there's no transfer which is a really big plus for me."

  • Medium coverage with a natural finish
  • Adds moisture back into the skin and subtracts oil

  • Smaller colour range

Best foundation for oily prone skin

This foundation by Bobbi Brown will work wonders if you have naturally oily skin but are looking to retain a matte finish, as reviews state: “I used to use a foundation for oily skin, but it no longer suited me and left my face looking chalky in some places. So, I hopped by a Bobbi Brown counter and they recommended this foundation and I'm so glad they did! It's very lightweight and can be layered for sheer or fuller coverage. It goes on well with a brush with minimal need to finger blend. The best bit is not having any visible dry or shiny patches! My skin looks really clear and even."

Although coverage is lightweight, it still does a great job of concealing redness or discolouration. It also has added glycerine for extra hydration, so your skin shouldn’t dry out.

  • Infused with Glycerine to hydrate the skin
  • 20 shades to choose from

  • Low SPF protection

What's the best way to prep mature skin before applying foundation?

We made sure to ask the experts for their best tips on how to achieve a youthful glow with foundation. We spoke to qualified health practitioner and skin specialist, Tammy Richards, at dispensary brand PureOptical and Hannah Lally, Avon UK's Head of Beauty.

Established in 1886, prestige make-up brand Avon knows a thing or two about make-up and have been a trusted source of inspiration and expertise for women of all ages for many years.

“When shopping for foundations for mature skin, it is common practice for consumers to jump straight into believing product claims and neglect to consider their base,” says Tammy.

"Foundations for mature skin and concealers can sit in fine lines, especially around the forehead (‘number 11s’) and eyes (‘crow’s feet’). A primer that includes silicone will work to disguise fine lines and serve as a base for foundation to lay, without sinking."

Tammy also recommends using a primer with SPF included as a must. "A primer with an SPF is a great option. No matter what time of year it is, SPF should always be worn. It is one of the best (and most affordable) anti-ageing ingredients out there.”

A great SPF option would be the NARS Cosmetics Radiance Primer with SPF35. As well as helping to give even coverage and improve the longevity of your make-up. It will help protect your skin from the sun and revitalise dull and fatigued skin.

"When wearing a foundation at any age, preparation is key," Hannah says. "Always start by applying your moisturiser and primer to a freshly cleansed face, allowing each product to sink into the skin before you apply foundation. When you take the time to prep your skin, you’ll notice your foundation glides on smoother and lasts longer.

"Add a couple of pumps to the back of your hand and apply with a fluffy buffing brush. Start in the centre of the face and work your way outwards to achieve a natural look."

For a silicone-free hydrating option that will help nourish your skin, we'd recommend the Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Hydrating Primer. If you're on the hunt for the perfect concealer for mature skin, take a look at our recommendations.

To set your foundation, we'd recommend a face powder for mature skin.

How do I find the right foundation shade?

Many make-up brands such as No7, Charlotte Tilbury, and Avon have Foundation Finders on their websites to help find the right shade for you. Alternatively, you can go to your local beauty counter to have your make-up shade matched in person.

If however, you have a beloved foundation that's been discontinued or are looking to try the best foundations for mature skin similar to your favourite, you can use Findation to find your match across multiple brands by simply using your existing foundation shade as reference.

Finding the right shade to suit your skin tone in a new buy can be difficult, but this nifty website should help so you don't need to buy and test, wasting money on deceivingly wrong shades. Also, remember, if you purchase a premium foundation, a lot of brands will allow you to swap the product if you do happen to pick up the completely wrong shade.
