17 years on from their last screen appearance, our favourite talking puppets, Sooty and Sweep are going to be back on the box. And we couldn't be more delighted!
The fluffy stars who appeared on telly from 1968 to 2001 are making a return next week with a new series of The Sooty Show on ITVBe's new pre-school slot littleBe.
Sooty was first created by the puppeteer and magician Harry Corbett in 1948 and got his name from the black soot Harry used to darken his ears. He remained with Harry until Richard Cadell took over the hand of Sooty in the Sixties, having got him from Harry's son Matthew.
Richard Cadell says of the new show, "Not only has Sooty turned 70 this year, but 2018 also marks 50 years since The Sooty Show first appeared on ITV in 1968! How exciting to be celebrating this incredible achievement with a brand new series. Long may it continue!"
Richard sold the rights to the Sooty franchise to a production company in 2000 but bought them back eight years later with plans for fresh television formats, which are now coming off.
The six-part ITVBe series will feature a number of celebrity cameo appearances from the likes of Peter Andre to TV presenter Lisa Riley and Only Fools and Horses legend John Challis and is promised to bring all the mischief and mayhem of the original Sooty and Sweep back to our screens.
- The Sooty Show will be on the littleBe slot on ITVBe between 9am and noon from Monday September 3
