The gritty series will be based on the memoirs of former London Metropolitan police detective DCI Colin Sutton (who will be played by Martin Clunes). DCI Sutton became well known for his tireless work pursuing serial killer Levi Bellfield.
Manhunt will follow the shocking real life story of the murder of French National Amelie Delagrange on Twickenham Green back in 2004, and how thanks to DCI Sutton it was linked to the murders of Marsha McDonnell in 2003 and schoolgirl Milly Dowler in 2002.
Despite a lack of much evidence, DCI Sutton never ruled out a connection between the cases, and worked hard to investigate the murders and bring the killer to justice.
In 2008 Bellfield was convicted of Amelie and Marsha’s murders, and later in 2011 found guilty of Milly’s as well.
Aside from the fact that Yours favourite Martin is involved, we’re also optimistic about the series as it’s been written by Ed Whitmore who was previously a writer on Silent Witness.
“With the full co-operation of ex DCI Colin Sutton, Manhunt dramatises his fight to find Amelie's killer, Levi Bellfield,” says Polly Hill, ITV’s Head of Drama. “It is a powerful, compelling script from Ed Whitmore, which illustrates how a dedicated and resilient police officer was determined to leave no stone unturned.
“I am delighted that Martin Clunes is to play Colin Sutton, in what will be a powerful and unmissable performance.”
Filming begins at the start of next year and we’ll let you know when there’s a release date.
