Star Rating: 4/5 Rooms from £90.00

CLC Duchally Country Estate is situated in 27 acres of Perthshire parkland, boasting some of the country’s most beautiful scenery with endless woodlands, forests, and gardens for all the family to explore. When you’re not out discovering the rich heritage and picturesque countryside, the estate’s luxurious rooms and lodges are the perfect place to relax and unwind. At the end of the day, enjoy Scottish gastronomic delights in the award winning Monteaths and Whisky Bar, with an array of over 50 whiskies to choose from.

Our stay .....

After a six hour train journey, we were met at the tiny station of Gleneagles by a friendly Chauffeur called Raymond, kindly arranged through the hotel. As he chatted  to us with the anticipated Scottish charm, we were struck by the roving hills and green countryside, which for October, was still vibrant. This picturesque setting was a good start ....

We were met by friendly staff, who showed us to our room which for a  King Size room was spacious, clean and boasting all the mod-cons you'd need but with a warm, classic décor. Whilst we rued the fact there were no Scottish biscuits to welcome us and the bathroom was a little too cosy for our liking, these are minor niggles in comparison to the overall feel of the room

We dined that evening in the only restaurant of the hotel being Monteaths, which boasts an award from 'Eat Scotland' for it's traditional menu with a modern twist and locally sourced products. Whilst a little on the pricey side, they do offer a special 2 or 3 course menu which we found value for money in view of the quality and presentation of the food.

The next trip was to the Whisky Bar which, naturally, can satisfy the desires of most whisky lovers! The bar is definitely a highlight of the hotel as the staff are kind and helpful, the choice of beverages, even for non-whisky lovers, very generous and the environment, endearingly Scottish. Its the type of bar that once you are there, you can happily relax and let the hours pass.

The next day, we were treated to a Scottish breakfast which was delicious! The quality of the food was high and I was thrilled (I probably ate more then I should have), to see potato cakes on the menu! If you didn't feel like a cooked breakfast, there was a good selection of yogurts, cereals, fruit and condiments. One of our party was gluten free and it's worth noting his requirements were suitable catered for both at dinner and breakfast. It's worth letting the hotel know beforehand of any dietary requirements.

The Country Estate boasts very tasteful self-catering lodges and as it is n the heart of the countryside, plenty of walks for all you avid walkers! If you are travelling in a larger party or want to bring children, staying in a lodge is certainly worth looking into.

A highlight of our trip was seeing the Red Squirrel, rummaging around the ground wild and free!! They were (unlike their grey squirrel rivals) very timid and you do need to have an eagle eye to spot them but when our efforts paid off, it was such a privilege to watch them and admire their beauty and agility. The estate supports the red squirrel providing them with strategically placed food boxes, which is heartening to see. Oh and if you like chickens, the chickens on the estate have their own lodge too, so it's not just the red squirrels that enjoy special treatment!

We really wanted to relax, so we spent most of our time on the estate going for walks and visiting the leisure center (free to all guests), which has a lovely pool, jacuzzi,  sauna, steam room, gym and café (you can even order a pizza from the café, for the next day, which we did and recommend). The changing rooms are a little on the compact side, so just be aware of this. Spa treatments can be booked in advance too (see website for details).

As for getting out and about, apart from venturing to walk to the local village of Auchterarder (it'll take you about an hour and 15 minutes) or going for a spot of golf the world famous Gleneagles, a car is recommended, if you don't want to keep getting a taxi to the train station. Perth and Edinburgh are worth taking a trip to ....

Why we give the stay a 4/5 rating .....

All the staff at CLC Duchally are friendly and helpful, the estate itself is nestled in some gorgeous countryside and there is plenty to do either at the leisure center or getting out and about to explore other towns and villages. We were thrilled to see the Red Squirrel too!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Scottish getaway and would go again. If you want to relax or want to explore and enjoy some of Scotland's highlights, please give this country estate your consideration!
