If you're anything like us, you'll look back at photographs of yourself in the 80s thinking, 'what on earth was I thinking?' While 80s makeup is definitely a little different to the makeup for older women you're wearing in your more mature years, it was certainly a fashion era to remember.

Whether you look back at the era with fond memories of 80s toys or your 80s style, you'll no doubt remember some of these typical 80s makeup trends of the time.

With celebrities like Madonna, David Bowie and Iman leading the way, there were plenty of celebrities inspiring our 80s makeup looks throughout the decade. Though we wouldn't dream of copying their styles today, it's always fun to take a nostalgic look back at the famous faces who inspired our 80s makeup looks and the retro makeup and brands we used to love.

Madonna

It's impossible to think about 80s style without thinking about the legendary Madonna. From her brightly coloured clothes to the big permed hair, she inspires 80s dressing up costumes today. Her statement eyeliner, big and bushy brows and bright lip made her the 80s icon, not to mention her signature beauty spot.

Grace Jones

Grace Jones was always a bit of a rule breaker when it came to beauty, and her bold looks continue to influence the fashion industry to this day. Bold blusher, drawn on eyebrows and colourful eyeshadow was Grace's go-to look throughout the 80s and beyond.

Although they might look a little more toned down compared to the likes of Madonna and Grace Jones, their fashion and beauty choices inspired the wardrobes and make up bags of young girls everywhere. Their make up was always a little darker, often with a berry lip.

David Bowie

Never one to go for the minimal look, David Bowie's iconic makeup looks are still just as famous today as they were in the 80s. With each of his new albums came a new and unique look, from the lightning bolt painted across his face to his subtle eyeliner.

Olivia Newton-John

She'll always be influential as Sandy in Grease the musical with her seductive red lip and big hair, but the late Olivia Newton-John was an 80s icon in her own right with her playful pink lips and statement eyeliner. This eyeliner is a trend which extended into 90s makeup trends too.

Debbie Harry

It's rare we ever saw Debbie Harry AKA Blondie without a red or pink lip to enhance her pout, but it was her bold, statement eyeliner which makes her an 80s makeup icon as well as a pop of colour on her cheeks. This look is similar to how Cher would wear her makeup in the 70s.

Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper's 80s makeup was just as bold as her hair. She really did have fun with her makeup, particularly when it came to blue eyeshadow which she would take right up to her brow, and sometimes beyond up to her hairline. This was always accompanied with some big false lashes and a bright red lip, unlike the more muted tones you probably go for now when shopping for your perfect lipstick shade.

Iman

The stunningly beautiful model, Iman, showed the world how to do 80s make up in a much more subtle and elegant way. We love her smokey yet subtle eye makeup and deep red lips for an 80s look we might be able to pull off nowadays.

Princess Diana

Although she was a member of the Royal family, Princess Diana wasn't afraid to show some of her personality when it came to both her wardrobe and her makeup. She would often be spotted with a pop of blue eyeliner to bring out the natural colour of her pupils and sometimes, she added a frosted lip. She also suffered from rosacea, so there's no doubt she resorted to a good concealer as her skin matured and changed with each rosacea flare up.

Boy George

Arguably, Boy George was the face of the 80s. With the brightly coloured blush, statement eyeliner, extended brows and deep berry lips, he was arguably a trailblazer of his generation, and still continues to wear statement makeup to this day.

Brooke Shields

She was one of the original cover girls and she definitely took a more minimal approach to makeup in the 80s. Despite that, her bushy eyebrows, smokey eye makeup and frosted lip make her an 80s icon. If you want to try and recreate her feminine lash look on your eyes, try having a go and lengthening and defining your lashes with a top mascara for older women.

Whitney Houston

Although she's most famous for having an incredible singing voice, Whitney was also quite influential with her makeup choices. She loved a brightly coloured eyeshadow colour as well as a bright pink or red lip and bright cheeks.

Joan Collins

The legendary actress Joan Collins is synonymous with 80s style, and her makeup is no exception. Her eyes are always looking perfectly lined with a 60s makeup style liner and smokey with some bold blush and defined, bright lip.
