Best portable photo printer

Description

The Canon SELPHY is a fantastic option for printing instantly anywhere, directly printing from a camera, memory card, or USB stick. You can quickly and easily print in a range of sizes, including postcard, square, or credit card-sized prints. Plus, you can even create and print ID photos in a wide range of accepted sizes.

Its size and portability make it a great photo printer for printing on the move or outdoors. It comes with a rechargeable battery pack that conveniently attaches to the back of the printer. One charge will provide enough power to deliver over 36 postcard-size prints.

All the photos are printed with a special protective coating, so your memories can last no matter how they are stored. Plus, this printer ensures lab-quality results with three colour inks and 256 levels per colour (24-bit colour depth). We also love that this handy portable printer has Auto Image Optimise with Scene and Face Detection, so the print can smartly correct imperfections, reduce unwanted noise, and print photos with extra clarity.

Review: "As a keen photographer I was dubious that this could match external prints, and I wasn't expecting it to as it's a home product created for ease of use, at a surprisingly good price. I was dumb founded (and still am) at the quality of the prints. The resolution/detail is excellent, colour reproduction excellent and quality of the material excellent."

Pros

  • Multiple connectivity
  • Portable
  • Quick print speed

Cons

  • App needs improvement

Best budget all-in-one photo printer

Description

This is an A4 printer that allows you to also scan and copy with web and photo functions. A bonus for productivity and having all your printing needs bundled into one piece of tech! It comes with Wi-Fi, so you can print from your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Further, it will rattle out up to eight shots per minute. This also means that you can even print from social media, the cloud, or your camera-roll gallery.

As one of HP's most versatile home printers, it'll automatically match print settings to paper type and print trays (with the main input tray having space for 125 sheets), and you can speed through multi-page and photo print jobs.

We love that this deal also comes with four months of instant ink included, helping to curb back on initial costs.

Review: "Easy to set up, but basic instructions in box. You need to download the app which provides some assistance but not fully intuitive but to do the basics it wasn’t too challenging. If you want to know about all the printer features there is a full manual on the HP website you can download - plus other videos to watch."

Pros

  • Includes six months' worth of Instant Ink
  • Great value

Cons

  • Seems to be no on/off switch

Best photo printer to personalise your photos

Description

Print up to 20 photos at once with the Canon SELPHY CP1500. The best thing about this mini photo printer is the option to print using a glossy, matt or mixture effect on the image. Our tester, Lily Anderson loved the effect of both but matt just topped it.

Tried and tested by Deputy Commercial Content Editor Lily Anderson, November 2022. Lily said: "Using this device has allowed me to decorate my home with memories. It was easy to set up and I love that you can choose the frames for each picture alongside the ability to edit, crop, filter, add text and more. This gets a 10/10 from me, the only advice I would give is to make sure you place the film the right way - so that the cannon text is not the side facing up. Otherwise, your photo will print on top of the text.

Pros

  • Ten minutes to set up maximum

Cons

  • Took 36 minutes to print 20 pictures (which included a change in the ink cartridge)

This photo printer also comes with a free app, where you can decorate your photos with stickers, frames, and filters before printing. We love this feature and it'll be a quick and fun way to create birthday or Christmas cards for loved ones. This is one of the best photo printers that will connect with your smartphone.

Review: "Ridiculously easy to set up, great photo quality which appear hardy and although there is slight red tinge to some skin colours, that depends on the quality of the original picture, the source of the picture and how much it has itself been compressed."

Pros

  • Easy set up

Cons

  • Quality can be mixed

Best all-round photo printer

Description

The Epson Expression is our favourite because, whilst it may be a little more expensive, it's a 3-in-1 mid-price printer that boasts great quality and fantastic resolution with the ability to scan and copy too. With six-colour Claria Photo HD inks, you'll be able to print long-lasting, glossy photos with enhanced quality up to A3 in size and even on CDs and DVDs.

With the included Wi-Fi, you can print wireless from your desktop, smartphone, or tablet. And with Epson's iPrint or Creative Print app you can also print directly from Facebook, create fun greeting cards, and even more. We love that for all its versatility, it's compact and user-friendly with a large touchscreen, making it an ideal printer to add to your home office space.

Review: "Needed a new printer to replace a 10-year-old HP. As a keen photographer, the most important feature was the quality of the prints. After a few test prints and adjustments to the printer settings up to now, I've been pleased with the results. Seems to respond well to small adjustments made through the editing software and print speed is fairly good even on the best quality setting (although this was not a factor when choosing the printer).

"The scanner and copier also seem to have reasonable quality, but I've only used these features with documents, so can't comment on picture quality. Set up was straightforward, connected to Wi-Fi without any problems although the printer has a USB option. As with most printers ink cost always raises an eyebrow, but I'm a light user this is not an issue for me. Like the fact that you get individual cartridges so only replacing the necessary colour."

Pros

  • Ink supplied
  • Versatile
  • User-friendly

Cons

  • Tricky set up

Best A3 photo printer

Description

The imagePROGRAF PRO-300 inherits the same DNA as the earlier imagePROGRAF PRO series. Offering superior colour and monochrome printing quality and productivity, this Canon A3 printer has the same print workflows as its larger models. Connectable by USB, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, this sleek model has an impressive print speed.

Review: "A quality large format printer. The pigments are rich and vibrant and despite the cost of ink and papers, it seems reasonably economical providing you stick with the larger prints. I seem to have hit the sweet spot. Despite reading about set-up issues I had no such problem, and within a few minutes was sending my test pages through. Its still early days of course but so far so good. I’m loving it."

Pros

  • Good quality

Cons

  • Some customers found it tricky to set up

Review: "Almost exclusively for photos. Having used HP for decades - my last one was a complete disaster ! I put my hands up to on-line help …it didn't work for me and the cost of ink was excessive. So much so I thought i'd spend more on the printer…….so far Brilliant ! The supplied ink shows no sign of lessening with use so I'm well on the way to 'paying for the printer'!"

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Quick and decent quality
  • Eco-friendly ink refills

Cons

  • Small screen

FAQs

What other features should you look for?

Printing should always be your first priority when looking for a printer, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't look for other features. A scanner can come in handy, especially if you ever need to fill out forms manually.

WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity are also great additions and will save you valuable time.

Plus, being able to connect to a phone app should make printing a lot easier.

How much will my running costs be?

A printer’s lifetime costs need to be considered, not just its purchase price. Two of the main ongoing costs of running a photo printer are ink and photo paper - as well as electricity, of course. Printing photos is going to require glossy photo paper and the occasional top-up of ink, depending on the printer type.

Printer companies like Epson are revolutionising the printer industry with their cost-effective, eco ink refills. However, if cost is a major deal-breaker for you, picking either an HP or Epson printer would be cost-effective.

The running costs are generally lower with these two.

What is the difference between a laser and an inkjet printer?

Laser and inkjet are the two main types of printers on the market. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. After all, the one that's best for you will depend on your printing needs.

Laser printers use toner powder, whereas inkjet printers use liquid ink.

An inkjet printer has a higher quality of printing, a laser printer doesn't smudge.

Laser printers are usually more expensive to buy. However, they're more efficient and cheaper in the long run. This is due to the fact that ink cartridges (which inkjet printers use) are costly and not as efficient.
