It can be hard to know what deals are worth going for and where you’ll actually save money this Black Friday. That’s why Anita Naik, Consumer Editor at VoucherCodes.co.uk, has given us her top tips on how you can get the most out of Black Friday this year.
“Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days in the UK calendar. Last year, research by VoucherCodes found that a massive 11.6 million British shoppers were getting ready to splash out online, whilst 9.5 million planned to head to the high street to make the most of cut-price bargains.
With Black Friday being a sure-fire way to save pounds on your festive purchases, here are my top tips to help you save money, get the products you want and enjoy the sales in the least stressful way possible.”
Shop online and avoid the chaos
Black Friday is infamous for the unpredictable mayhem it can cause in shops. For the last few years, retailers like ASDA opted out of running in-store activity after the previous year’s madness made headline news. More shoppers are choosing the online option if they can!
Shop earlier rather than later
Although getting up early to shop doesn’t seem too appealing in November; if you hop online you can get the best deals from the comfort of your own sofa. It’s definitely worth getting on your laptop early, as a number of big sites crashed in previous years under the volume of traffic in the afternoon. The early bird beats the online crowds.
Sign up for email offers in advance
Sign up to retailer’s newsletters in advance and it could mean that you’re in the know before Black Friday even begins! Or better yet, sign up to VoucherCodes and we’ll do all the hard work for you, gathering deals as soon as retailers announce them, and sending you updates.
Retailers are beginning to spread their offers out a little more, these can start as early as Monday 19th November. This eases the pressure on customers, so they don’t try to buy it all at once. It also helps them space out their deliveries and reduces the chance of websites crashing, so don’t wait until Friday to look around.
Check throughout the day
Offers are released throughout the day, sometimes for just a few hours, and occasionally the discount reduces over time - it pays to be extra observant. If you have a particular brand in mind, you should follow them on social media channels as well in case there are special offers for their followers.
Shop with Christmas in mind
Black Friday is just weeks away from Christmas, so you should use this as an opportunity to get all your Christmas shopping for the best prices. From stocking fillers to gift wrap, or even a new TV to watch The Snowman on, planning ahead can save you a lot!
Don’t buy into the hype
There are amazing discounts to be found, but don’t overspend for the sake of it – don’t buy a new TV if don’t really need one. It’s a good idea to write down everything you’re planning to buy ahead of time and then search for those items. Make a budget for the day and keep track of your total spend. Then you won’t too get carried away.

Top of the shops: Our predictions
Amazon: Look out for Amazon’s lightning deals that give massive hourly discounts on items like TVs and DVD box sets, right through to household must-haves. Keep an eye out in particular for Alexa promotions over the weekend as well.
John Lewis: Price Match will be at its absolute best on Black Friday; with John Lewis committed to offering their customers the best price they’ll have fantastic home appliance and technology deals.
Argos: As a shop that sells everything it’s a great place to check for discounts on early Christmas gifts and toys. They’ve been known to start early on Black Friday week, so check regularly for offers.
Debenhams: From beauty and fragrance to homeware and fashion, Debenhams will be hosting great offers on all their departments over Black Friday week. Sign up to their newsletter to stay in the know.
ao.com: It’s definitely worth checking ao.com for household appliances and electrical deals as they had a lot to offer in 2017.
Currys PC World: Think electricals and think GREAT discounts. Previous years saw iPads, MacBooks and iMacs with heart racing discounts so we’ve got our fingers crossed for 2018’s Black Tag Event.
ASOS: It will be a fashion frenzy on Black Friday with ASOS: Hundreds of our most loved brands with a cheaper price tag and not a single in store queue to worry about. The last few years they’ve offered a pretty sweet 20% off, definitely one to keep an eye on this year.
Very: In previous years, Very ran hourly Black Friday deals over fashion, electricals, gaming and more. Be sure that you’re first in line for their releases this November.
GAME: This is a good place to start if you know anyone asking Father Christmas for a game console this year. Pay close attention to their bundles on Black Friday week as you can get a great saving on some of the latest releases.
What to watch out for this year
Check the supermarkets
Sainsbury’s and Tesco have had some offers in-store over the past few years, mostly on toys and electricals. Although ASDA have chosen not to take part for the last 3 years, could this be the year to return? With Aldi and Lidl dipping their toe in the water last year, we’ll be keeping a close eye on them as well.
For the last few years UGG have smashed Black Friday week with offers of up to 20% off. We’re predicting similar offers this year, so be sure to check the Christmas lists beforehand. We’re also expecting discounts on trainers, from the likes of Nike, adidas, Office Shoes and Clarks.
Plan your next trip
Travel sites have started embracing Black Friday weekend in recent years and Hotels.com had some great discount codes last year. We’ll be expecting more of the same in 2018. Also, it’s worth keeping an eye-out for discount flights this weekend too!
