Find out what our Yours beauty reviewer thought of the new ghd Platinum+ hair styler below.

ghd Platinum+ Hair Straightener: overview

Pros

  • Ready to heat in 20 seconds
  • The temperature never exceeds 185ºC which means no damage
  • Wishbone hinge means you can create curls and waves as well as straighten

Cons

  • Elevated plates may catch on your hair
  • You cannot change the temperature from 185 degrees

Whether your hair is curly, frizzy or a bit lacklustre, a good pair of straighteners is worthy of the investment we make in them! As well as achieving smoothness, you can also use them to create curls or waves similar to a hair waver tool. It takes a bit of practice but is doable.

Ghd has a reputation as being the best in hair care, but is it really worth the price tag? At £229, it is priced a hundred pounds less than the Dyson Corrale, but works almost exactly the same.

It’s a tricky premise - to achieve perfectly smooth and silky hair without suffering the damage that extreme heat can bring. This is the aim of ghd’s haircare experts and with the new platinum straighteners, they’ve gone a long way to achieving this.

Ready to heat in 20 seconds, the temperature never exceeds 185 degrees which is apparently the optimum temperature without damaging hair. I did slightly miss the opportunity to customise what temperature to set my plates at, like with the Glamoriser hair straightener, but if ghd is trying to keep my hair healthy, I can appreciate that.

Testing the ghd Platinum+

We tested these sleek and stylish straighteners on full, curly locks (my daughter) and fine, frizzy locks (me).

The effect on the curly hair was instant – perfectly straight and smooth hair with no static or frizz in a matter of seconds. Usually, my daughter uses a hair dryer brush, but this was much quicker and gave glossier results. My daughter was party-ready in no time! Her hair can be hard to tame, but she didn’t need any extra styling sprays to achieve great hair, she just used a heat protection spray before straightening.

As for my fine and frizzy hair, I wasn’t expecting miracles, but my main issue with using straighteners is that it tends to make my hair limp rather than fabulous! This is perhaps where the new Platinum+ straighteners come into their own and achieve their price tag - the sensors adjust to the kind of hair you have and I was able to achieve a smooth glossy look without making frizz worse. I used a heat protection spray but none of the other array of products I normally use to achieve fuller, smoother hair. I was able to create many a-youthful hairstyles, that looked very glossy and put-together.

ghd Platinum+ Hair Straightener: our final verdict…

An investment buy, whatever kind of hair you have, but the results are best on full, thick locks.
