Looking for a new item to join your night-time ritual may seem a little daunting, but we’ve written a no-nonsense guide to night creams. Perhaps, you’re thinking: are night creams necessary? And, what’s wrong with using my ordinary moisturiser for my night-time pamper? Day creams are light, and protective, sitting well under your SPF and make-up for daily wear. However, at the end of a long day, a night cream is just the ticket to prepare your skin for the next day by hydrating and replenishing it. Night creams, usually, are infused with antioxidants, peptides and hydration, so be prepared to wake up anew.

How we tested these night creams
We asked Piper Huxley, a contributor to Yours, to put this piece together. Piper has written about beauty, wellness and women's health for three years - and has written many pieces about the best products. She tested a few of these night creams for inclusion, and her reviews are genuine. For this piece, Piper thoroughly researched the best ingredients for mature skin to dictate her product choices.
Verdict: Which is the best?
Our favourite is the Olay Retinol 24 Night Cream, for a hydrating and smoothing cream, that not only hydrates wrinkles but combats any damage to your skin. For a youthful glow, consider this pick.
However, if you're on a budget, L’Oréal Paris' Wrinkle Expert Anti-Wrinkle 55+ Night Cream uses fortifying calcium and hydrating, anti-wrinkle technology to restore mature skin overnight to feel more elastic.
FAQs
What is a good night cream for mature skin?
If you're looking for a good night cream for mature skin, there are a few ingredients we'd look out for. After all, you want to get the best night cream for your skin type, sensitivity and any skin issues you want to address. However, all skincare formulated for young and mature skin comes with anti-ageing properties. Thanks to L’Oreal Paris, we have a no-nonsense list of the best anti-ageing components:
Vitamin C - is a good antioxidant pick for your anti-ageing skincare routine. Used in plenty of the suggestions above, vitamin C is a powerful defence against wrinkles, fine lines, dullness and dark spots.
Niacinamide – is a form of vitamin B3, with the stuff to help preserve skin elasticity and retain moisture. But, that’s not all! Not only does it improve skin barrier health, but helps with redness and dark spots.
Retinol – may be the best ingredient for ageing skin. Derived from vitamin A, retinol is always recommended by dermatologists for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Collagen – if not present, can be promoted by other ingredients. Whether ingested via collagen supplement (hair, skin, nails) or in your moisturiser, it’s packed with benefits, including skin firmness.
Calcium – though found in food, can be used in skincare, too. Worried about thinning your skin? It’s a fortifying component – perfect for maintaining barrier function and skin cell replenishment.
Hyaluronic Acid – is another star ingredient, found in most of our picks, above. For soft, bouncy, plump and glowing skin, L’Oreal recommends this active ingredient to work its magic on your under-eyes.
Vitamin E – is another common ingredient. Referred to as “tocopherol”, vitamin E is multi-functional, from its antioxidant to regenerative properties. It’s super hydrating and protects from UV exposure, too.
Aloe Vera – may be already in your skincare roster, to help soothe your skin after post-sun. However, it’s an affordable hydrator, packed with vitamins and antioxidant benefits for smooth, shiny skin.
Ceramides – are necessary for healthy skin barrier function, says L’Oréal Paris, as they aid the skin in moisture retention and prevent water loss. Ceramides hydrate and have soothing properties, too.
You’ll find all of these ingredients in our round-up, above.
Can you use night cream during the day?
We wouldn’t recommend it, says UpCircle Beauty. After all, they do not protect you from any harmful UV rays; rather, they’re designed to restore and repair your skin health, not protect, the skincare brand adds. With night creams worn during the day, you won’t be protected from the sun. Whereas, day creams usually come packed with UV-protective minerals – and pair perfectly with SPFs, too.
Do night creams cause acne?
No – they shouldn’t. If anything, the night creams we’ve chosen (especially) come complete with acne-fighting ingredients. Many of our choices, above, contain anti-acne components such as Salicylic acid (which removes dead skin and helps pores unclog) and AHAs (which reduce inflammation).
