Best overall hair curler

The ghd Curve Classic Wand creates dreamy waves, whatever your hair type. Taking just 25 seconds to heat up and with a light and sound to indicate it is ready to use, you can curl your hair in seconds - perfect for when you're in a rush in the morning. The 28mm – 26mm oval-shaped barrel is suitable for all hair lengths and other features include a professional-length cord, automatic sleep mode after 30 minutes and universal voltage.

Customer review: "I brought this wand about 2 weeks ago now. I curl my hair probably more than you should at least 4 days a week. I have thin hair and my curls don't last long. But with this wand they last me all day and the next day I'm just touching up. Best part is that my hair doesn't smell burnt!!! My other wand was leaving my hair smell burnt which was an awful smell. .. This wand heats up so quickly, like I'm talking 3 seconds, it also makes the cutest sounds when you turn it off/on and when it's ready for use. In my opinion this is definitely worth the price so far!"

Pros

  • Comes with protective glove
  • Ultra-zone technology
  • Barrel suitable for all hair lengths

Cons

  • Doesn't come with a protection case

Best value hair curler

As well as being of great value, the TRESemmé Professional Ceramic tong is a medium-sized tong with a 25mm ceramic-coated barrel and is the perfect styling tool for creating defined, soft curls with a smooth finish. A real salon tool, the tong has three temperature settings with a maximum of 210°C.

Customer review: "Very nice curler, good thickness to get those loose curls, heats up very quickly. It comes with a cover for it to cool down, which is very handy. It also has a couple of settings, but I find it very effective even on the lowest temperature. Highly recommend!"

Pros

  • Great for fine hair and short hair
  • Heats up quickly

Cons

  • Some felt the cord could be a little longer

Best for multi-use hair curler

The Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete In Vinca Blue and Rosé uses the innovational Coanda effect which creates "a spinning vortex of air around the cylindrical shaped barrels of the tool" and "attracts the hair through the airflow, encouraging hair to wrap itself around the barrel and curling it through the use of the air vortex." Engineered for multiple hair types with new barrels to curls and wave in both directions, brushes to control and shape and the multi-functional smoothing dryer to dry, smooth and hide flyaways.

Rated and reviewed by Yours writer Emily Gilbert: "I was really impressed with the curls both barrels produced, personally favouring the 30mm barrel for voluminous results. I loved the final look and was chuffed at how effortless it had been to produce.

"Research quickly told me that getting the curls to hold was a common problem people experienced with the Airwrap. While the type and condition of hair you have is naturally going to have an impact on how long your curl is going to last, the people that were finding success with their curls were using pre-styling products before using their Dyson Airwrap, which I had not been. The products used will entirely depend on each individual and it can take some time to figure it out but I personally found applying a hair mousse really helped my curls to stay in longer.

If you learned to curl your hair with straighteners instead of using a curling wand, the L'Oreal SteamPod 4.0 Hair Straightener & Styling Tool creates waves and curls like a dream. If you’re not familiar with the tech behind it, it does things a little differently. It uses an integrated mini water tank to steam hair which promises to cause less damage than conventional tools.

  • Less heat damage

Cons

  • Need to get used to them

Best hair curler for waves

Whether you're looking for loose curls, trendy mermaid hair or a classic beach wave look, a hair waver tool will help you achieve the perfect style. Amika's Deep Waver is super easy to use and thanks to the triple barrel aesthetic you won't get any kinks in your hair.

Customer review: "This tool is exceptional! Right now I own six wavers and they have all given me the same result - creases, falling flat... just never quite what I was looking for! After being FED UP, I finally bought this one, and I'm so glad I did! It is exactly what I was going for! It takes my fine, thin, pencil-straight hair, to BIG, voluminous/bouncy waves that I never knew my hair was capable of! Thank you, Amika!"

  • Works on all hair types, textures, and thicknesses

Best hair curlers FAQs

Do hair curlers damage your hair?

The short answer is yes, but not as much as they used to and there is so much you can do to prevent severe heat damage. Even the best hair curlers can break the hair and make it weaker. Unfortunately, using heat on your hair is pretty inevitable and heat damage will be an ongoing cycle of damage to your hair, especially if you use hair tools like hair curlers and hair wavers every single day. The best thing you can do as a frequent hair curler is to use a heat protection spray and/ or to try using methods that don't rely on heat. Or just keep to using heated tools on special occasions.

How long do hair curlers last?

Although many of us are guilty of holding onto our trusted pair of hair curlers for years, some experts say even the best hair curlers normally need to be replaced every two to three years. If you notice yours becoming less and less effective, it could be time to switch to a new set. Wrapping the cord around your curlers is also a big no-no, and can cause a lot of power problems - even if you think they're still working fine! If you rarely go a day without turning on your trusty curler, it will run through its lifespan fairly quickly compared to if you just use it once a week.
