It never fails to excite us when we hear a brand new series of Call the Midwife is on its way. News of the new series with some behind-the-scenes shots were shared on the official Call the Midwife social media channels back in May this year, and ever since then, we've been counting down the days until season 13.

The sneak peak showed the Call the Midwife cast members in action on the famous set, shooting some scenes for the upcoming 13th series of the drama.

Although the release date hasn't yet been confirmed, we do know that a new Call the Midwife Christmas special will be on our screens this festive season on Christmas Day. And hopefully, if it's like previous years, the 13th series will follow early in January 2024.

Since that first behind-the-scenes snap, it's also been announced that filming for series 13 has now wrapped up.

In the Instagram post shared on the official account for Call the Midwife, the caption reads:

This wonderful shot of Georgie Glen (Miss Higgins) has just been sent to us live from the set of Call the midwife, where the very final scene of Series 13 has just been completed!!

We just CAN'T wait to show you what we've been working on xxx

Now the countdown begins to...THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL!! 🎄☃️

Call the Midwife returns soon with a new Christmas Special, and Series 13 in 2024 xx'

Call the Midwife series 13 cast and plot

Not much is currently known about the plot and cast of the new series, but we expect to see some familiar faces returning from season 12 of Call the Midwife.

Actor Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner, also shared this exciting photo of Dr Turner's desk with the caption, 'Hello again old friend', so we can certainly expect him to return for series 13.

While we can't be sure which cast members we can expect to return for the 13th series, we presume we'll see many of our favourites including Helen George as Trixie who'll be settling into married life with new husband, Matthew Played by Olly Rix) after they found romance in series 11 of Call the Midwife.

It's also likely we'll see Linda Bassett return as Nurse Phyllis Crane while we should also expect to see fan favourite, Jenny Agutter returning as Sister Julienne. We can also expect to see some newer characters return including Cyril Robinson played by Zephryn Taitte and Violet Buckle played by Annabelle Apsion.

There will also be the introduction of some new characters in the form of Natalie Quarry who'll be playing Student Midwife Rosalind Clifford.

When is series 13 of Call the Midwife set?

We're pretty sure the series will be made up of eight episodes in total, and we know the Christmas special will begin around the late 60s with Apollo 8 poised to circle the moon.

Around this time and into the 1970s, the UK saw many medical advancements as well as huge societal changes in everything from the political landscape to fashion and music.
