It never fails to excite us when we hear a brand new series of Call the Midwife is on its way. News of the new series with some behind-the-scenes shots were shared on the official Call the Midwife social media channels.

The sneak peak showed the Call the Midwife cast members in action on the famous set, shooting some scenes for the upcoming 13th series of the drama.

Although the release date hasn't yet been confirmed, we do know that a new Call the Midwife Christmas special will be on our screens this festive season. And hopefully, if it's like previous years, the 13th series will follow early in 2024.

In the Instagram post, the caption reads: 'BREAKING!! It's official - Call the Midwife has begun filming for Series 13!!

'We bring these pics straight from our filming set, where our intrepid Buckles, accompanied by the lovely Cyril, have the honour of beginning Series 13 with the opening scene!!

'Actors Cliff Parisi, Zephryn Taitte and Annabelle Apsion were on hand to posing for our traditional clapperboard shot, while the marvellous Daniel Laurie (Reggie, pictured) was waiting in the wings to begin his year's work with the family:-)

'We have SO MUCH to show you - beginning with our Christmas Special - so stay tuned!!

'Call the Midwife returns with a new Christmas Special, and Series 13 in 2024 xx.'

Call the Midwife series 13 cast and plot

Not much is currently known about the plot and cast of the new series, but we expect to see some familiar faces returning from season 12 of Call the Midwife.

Actor Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner, also shared this exciting photo of Dr Turner's desk with the caption, 'Hello again old friend', so we can certainly expect him to return for series 13.

While we can't be sure which cast members we can expect to return for the 13th series, we presume we'll see many of our favourites including Helen George as Trixie who'll be settling into married life with new husband, Matthew after they found romance in series 11 of Call the Midwife.

It's also likely we'll see Linda Bassett return as Nurse Phyllis Crane while we should also expect to see fan favourite, Jenny Agutter returning as Sister Julienne.
