We all love a bargain. The German discount supermarket Aldi has cemented its place on the high street and become shoppers’ go-to grocery store. Now, it has gained popularity with animal owners. Aldi pet range has a whole host of products, including dog coats, dog treats, dog beds and much more. Aldi also has a selection of dog food offering premium wet and dry meals for your pooch without having to break the bank.
With so many different types of dog food on the market, it can be difficult to know what product is best for your furry friend. Good quality dog food is essential in ensuring that your pup has a long and healthy life.
What are the different types of dog food?
There are five main types of dog foods that you can incorporate into your dog’s diet:
- Dry dog food (often referred to as Kibble)
- Wet food
- Semi moist
- Home cooked
Each type of food has its pros and cons. What one pup may love; another may turn their wet little nose up at. So, it can be tricky for owners to know which food is best.
Aldi offers both wet and dry dog food in its range, as well as grain and grain-free recipes.
So, what’s the difference between a grain-free diet and one that’s not?
Believe it or not, it all goes back to World War II, when dog food began being mass-produced in Britain. Kibble was the go-to for dog owners. After the war, people did not have the luxury of expensive and best quality meats, especially not for their canines. So, inexpensive additives like corn, wheat and barley were introduced to dog food to keep costs down.
Today, some dog food still contains grains like wheat and corn. However, grain-free dog food removes the grains and replaces it with higher meat content.
Pros and cons of grain-free dog food:
It is easily digestible
Grain-free dog food is easier for your dog to digest. It is much harder for their stomachs to break down carbohydrates and starch. Grains like wheat and corn can be very heavy on your pup’s stomach. If your dog already experiences gastrointestinal problems, it would be a good idea to switch to a grain-free diet.
Helps your dog stay active
Just like humans, eating too many carbohydrates is not a good idea. It can leave your dog feeling sluggish and lower their energy levels. Carbs increase your dog's blood sugar levels, which can lead to health and weight issues.
Grain-free dog food is more expensive as it uses more meat products.
Not ideal for older dogs
As previously stated, a grain-free diet can give dogs a lot more energy. Elderly dogs do not require the level of energy and thus a grain diet may be more suitable.
What types of dog food are available at Aldi?
Aldi offers two brands of dog food exclusive to their store: Earl and Langham.
The Earl’s dog food range uses grains in their recipes, whereas Langham does not. The Langham range has a higher price tag but is significantly cheaper than other grain-free products on the market.
Langham has a very limited amount of choice of products compared to the Earl’s range, which has a large selection.

How much should I feed my dog?
5 to 12kg 120-210g/day
12 to 35kg 210 380g/day
25 to 35kg 380 480g/day
This is an average of how much a dog should eat depending on its size. Dog food should be measured out before serving to ensure that you are not overfeeding your animal.
Each meal should be served with fresh drinking water. The exact amount of food that a dog requires will depend on different factors such as breed, age and activity levels.
It is important to not overfeed your canine to ensure they can live a healthy life. If you are concerned about your dog's weight visit your vet to discuss the matter further.
