The SodaStream Duo is the brand's most premium sparkling water machine and the first to be compatible with both SodaStream’s new stylish glass and reusable plastic bottles. If fizz is your tipple of choice, you can't go wrong with SodaStream as the market leader, sporting an impressive range of sparkling water makers. While each does essentially the same - producing those bubbles we just can't get enough of - different models come with their own perks and designs.

With the Duo, you can make sparkling water with ease at the push of a button. Featuring the new Quick Connect technology for fast and easy CO2 cylinder insertion, the Duo is the perfect sparkling water maker whether you're hosting friends and family, or making sparkling water at home to take anywhere on the go with you.

At the top of the SodaStream range, we decided to put the Duo to the test to see what makes it so premium, and if the experience warrants the highest price tag.

Testing the SodaStream Duo

Ask anyone who knows me and they'll be able to attest to just how much I love fizzy drinks, specifically Pepsi Max. Rarely a day goes by when I don't drink it and while I know it isn't the healthiest habit, it also isn't the most eco-friendly or cost-effective either. That's why I switched to using a SodaStream in 2021, and I haven't looked back since. While I had previously tried and tested the SodaStream Spirit One Touch - an older model - I was glad to test the SodaStream Duo after the One Touch finally met its end.

The sparkling water maker

First things first, I have to give Brownie points for the design of the Duo. While I never disliked how the previous models looked on the countertop, it's fair to say that the Duo looks that extra bit premium. This in itself helps elevate my kitchen as it's one of those kitchen appliances you'll have on display constantly. The black/ almost charcoal grey body paired with the sleek stainless steel flask looks seriously smart though there is a white option too if that's better suited to your kitchen aesthetic.

Plus, it's cordless. This was something I didn't think I'd mind so much but having one less plug in use and one less cable messily hidden behind appliances helps to add to that premium quality and modern edge.

In many ways, the Duo is more akin to the original SodaStream just elevated to the 21st century. Unlike other sparkling water makers, the bottle is carbonated in the flask out of sight. While I did somewhat miss not being able to visually track how 'bubbly' my water was getting, it does make the Duo markedly quieter than some others I've tested. To 'lock' the bottle into position, you simply push the bottle holder back and slide the top down (very satisfying!) before locking it into place.

While I've no qualms with it, it's worth pointing out that it does involve a bit more action on your part to get the bottle into position compared to other models that just need the bottle top inserting and pushing back. The mechanism to 'lock' the bottle in can feel a bit tough post-carbonation which may not be suitable if you have weaker hand dexterity.

The glass carafe

Finally, we can't finish talking about design without mentioning the glass carafe. Thanks to the dual carbonation system that allows for fizzing in both glass and reusable bottles, much like the machine itself, the glass carafe certainly feels more premium. Made of thick glass and weighty, SodaStream says it's ideal "for elevating dining and hosting experiences." While I haven't used it when it comes to entertaining friends and family, I can't lie that it's my go-to over the plastic alternative. It just makes my drinks feel more luxurious, and who doesn't deserve a treat every now and again?

Performance

Using the SodaStream
©Eleanor Weaver/ Yours

The SodaStream Duo performed admirably to deliver bubbly beverages in minutes. As mentioned, you can't visually see how the bubbling process is going but with each press of the button on top of the machine, the sound does change which I've found is a good indicator of finding the sweet spot. That being said, if you prefer a weaker bubble, you can learn through trial and error the number of presses your bottle needs.

The fact the bottle is contained in the flask and is manually operated has massively reduced the risk of over-bubbling and getting a spray of water over your countertop. While SodaStream models like the E-Terra have one-touch operation, in our tests we've often found it's this that's led to an accidental water display in the kitchen.

In terms of cleaning the bottles, both the glass and reusable plastic bottles are dishwasher safe and have come out perfectly clean - just make sure they're standing upside down on the bottom rack.

The gas cylinders

As part of SodaStream's newer range of sparkling water makers, the Duo uses the patented, pink Quick Connect cylinders and it really does make a difference. Older models used blue CO2 cylinders that required screwing in, but these just need to be clicked into place making them quick and easy to switch in and out.

Ordering through Amazon or SodaStream, your Duo will come with a gas cylinder but you can buy more via the website or from local stockists. I always like to make sure I have at least one extra on standby and then visit my local Sainsbury's to exchange my CO2 when the time comes. It's super simple to do - just scan the barcode of each (this deducts £10 for the exchange) and leave the old gas cylinder with a shop assistant. I'd recommend incorporating your gas exchange with a grocery shop to avoid a wasted journey or making use of SodaStream's online gas exchange.

Final verdict

There's no doubt using a SodaStream has saved me money and reduced my use of plastic. But as mentioned, all SodaStream machines essentially do the same thing - produce sparkling water you can add delicious flavours to (I'd always recommend the Pepsi Max Cherry syrup). If you're new to the world of sparkling water or are unsure if a SodaStream is right for you, going for a cheaper model may be your best bet. But if you're after a newer model or want that 'duo' of beautiful style and substance to complement your modern kitchen, you can't go wrong with the Duo. Design is where the Duo excels.

Likewise, if being able to use a glass bottle instead of a plastic bottle excites you, the Duo is your absolute go-to. At the time of writing, the only other sparkling water maker that has the option for a glass bottle is the Aarke Carbonator Pro - more expensive with only the one bottle included.

SodaStream Duo FAQs

How much is the SodaStream Duo UK?

At time of writing, the SodaStream Duo has an RRP of £164.99 for the starter kit (that includes a gas cylinder), or you can buy without for £132.99. Alternatively, you can find additional bundles on the SodaStream website that include SodaStream flavours.

If you like the look of the Duo but don't want to pay the price, we'd always recommend keeping an eye on Amazon where deals often appear, especially during sale events such as Prime Day and Black Friday.

What is the difference between SodaStream Duo and Terra?

There's not too much differentiation between the SodaStream Duo and Terra. Both new models in the SodaStream range, they're cordless, manually operated and use the pink 'Quick Connect' gas cylinders. The main difference lies in the use of bottles - the Duo allows you to use the glass carafe and plastic bottles, while the Terra is limited to plastic bottles. The design and price of each are different too; the Terra is more classic in style and more affordable while the Duo has that more premium, modern design.

If you're not too fussed about using glass bottles, the Terra makes for a great alternative to the Duo and a better entry-level option due to the lower price - you can shop below.

Alternatives to the SodaStream Duo

SodaStream Terra Sparkling Water Maker
Price: $89.00

Amazon's Choice for SodaStream and a bestseller on Amazon, the SodaStream Terra makes a great alternative with many of the same features; cordless design, manual operation, dishwasher-safe bottles (available to use with 1L and 0.5L bottles) and a choice of two colours.

With a side arm lever also akin to the original SodaStream, we love the retro-looking design that's once again propelled into the modern age. Make sure to read our full SodaStream Art review for our thoughts.

If you're after the most impressive-looking gadget for your kitchen, we'd recommend the Aarke Carbonator Pro. It's a yet more premium purchase but it's stylish, sturdy and comes in a choice of three colours - matte black, steel and sand. It uses exclusively glass bottles and can be used with the blue SodaStream gas cylinders as well as their brand - helpful to know if you'd rather pick up gas from your local shop than rely on the online Aarke service.

How we tested the SodaStream Duo

Eleanor drinks fizzy drinks like water, and as an owner of previous SodaStream models, she was able to test the kitchen appliance to its full capacity and see how it compares to others on the market. Eleanor and her partner used the SodaStream Duo over six months, using it weekly, if not daily, throughout the period. She was able to test the glass and plastic bottles, how they wash, the performance of the Duo, and the gas cylinders.
