Whether it’s a sprinkle of sparkle or a splash of red, choosing a festive outfit for Christmas Day or New Year's Eve celebrations is an easy way to boost your mood.

If you’re in need of some style inspiration, we've asked our favourite fashion followers to share their Christmas Day looks. Just don't forget your favourite winter coat to wear on top!

Festive shades and bold styles

“I dress for comfort, but I also like to feel dressed up and elegant and love a bold look. I adore my red velvet skirt, which was a much-appreciated Christmas gift from my late mother-in-law. It holds a special memory for me, as she’s no longer here to spend the holiday with us. It has a stretchy waistband (a great choice for a day all about eating!) and I find the length and pleats really flattering.

“I love how modern it looks when teamed with this leopard print top, but it also works well with a simple roll neck.

‘Don’t forget – always wear a full-length pinny in the kitchen!’

“For me, Christmas is a time to relax and enjoy being at home. While my husband does most of the cooking, I act as sous chef – prepping the veg, making desserts and topping up drinks!”

Sparkle and good old festive glamour

“I tend to wear trousers on the day as they’re more practical for playing with my young grandchildren. Then I like to add some sparkle on my top half for some good old festive glamour. It can get hot in the kitchen, so for me short sleeves and layers are a must. I’ll also be wearing this festive red scarf, which is quick and easy to put on or take off depending on the temperature. To finish my look, I love adding statement accessories for some added glitz.”

‘Stick to comfy footwear, this is no time to break in new shoes!’

Lots of colour for a special day

"I’m now eight months into my 12-month shopping break in an effort to be greener and also wear more of what I already own. I’m particularly pleased with my Christmas Day outfit, because the only new item I’ll be wearing is M&S boots. Everything else is vintage or from a charity shop. In fact, the trousers are one of my biggest achievements as I managed to take the inside leg in two inches – a big feat for a novice seamstress!

‘Patterns are handy for hiding any mishaps in the kitchen.’

“I always dress up at Christmas – my husband jokes that I’d dress up for the opening of an envelope! Last year I wore a vintage dress, but this year I’m mixing things up with this jacket, white evening shirt and these fabulous embroidered trousers.”

What will the stylists be wearing?

Rachel Gold and Isobel Kershaw

‘We’ll be wearing sequins’

Rachel Gold and Isobel Kershaw are renowned celebrity stylists and creators of Style Myself With Confidence.

Rachel says: “I can’t resist sequins and always dress up at Christmas. This year in particular I feel the need to be more glamorous and add more sparkle on Christmas Day. Colour is one of the easiest ways to lift the spirits. Replace black with cobalt, berry, or bright red. Or if you’re feeling brave, go for silver or gold for a glamorous Hollywood feel.”

Isobel says: “I also love sequins and a long-sleeved sequin dress is always my go-to look at this time of year. I find it especially mood boosting. So many of us keep our ‘special’ clothes gathering dust in the wardrobe. Get them out and feel fabulous whatever the non-occasion is! Even just one piece (and it can be an accessory) will help elevate your outfit – life’s too short to save things for best!”
