Although there are many teeth whitening products and kits that will give you a sparkling smile, some of these kits aren't suitable if you suffer from sensitivity. That's why many of us resort to natural teeth whitening methods which are safe for our gums.

While these natural teeth whitening techniques work for some, it's worth mentioning that there is very little science to back their effectiveness. If you're looking for quick teeth whitening, it's a good idea to go professional or try some stronger at home teeth whitening kits.

1. Baking soda

We know how many amazing bicarbonates of soda uses there are, and brushing your teeth with it is just one. We know it's a brilliant weapon when it comes to cleaning and removing stains, so it makes sense that its natural whitening properties work on our teeth too. It can also prevent bacteria from growing, improving our oral health.

To try this method, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water and brush your teeth with the paste. Try this a few times per week for the best results.

2. Different fruits and vegetables

Not only can fruit and vegetables be beneficial for our health, but they can also help whiten teeth. Strawberries in particular may have whitening properties thanks to the acids found in them.

To use this method, mix together smashed strawberries and baking soda and brush the teeth. Remember not to do this too often as it can be harmful to your enamel over time.

3. Oil pulling

This is a popular method commonly used in India to improve oral hygiene. It involves swishing coconut oil around in your mouth to remove bacteria.

To try this, put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth. As coconut oil is solid at room temperature, you may need to leave it in your mouth for a few seconds before working to push and pull the oil through your teeth, repeating this for around 15-20 minutes. It's safe to do daily as it won't erode your teeth, making it ideal for those who suffer from sensitivity. Other oils can be used, but coconut oil tends to be the most popular because it has a pleasant taste.

4. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is the ingredient found in most home teeth whitening products as it's a natural bleaching agent. It's found in many teeth whitening toothpastes too at a very diluted volume.

This method is not recommended for people who suffer from sensitivity as it can cause irritation to the gums.

There are a number of ways you can use hydrogen peroxide to whitening teeth. You may want to use it as a mouthwash before brushing. Just be sure to get a 1.5% or 3% solution. If you can only find 3%, add more water to dilute it.

You can also try mixing it with baking soda to make a paste using 10ml of hydrogen peroxide mixed with 6g of baking soda. Just be sure to limit your use.

5. Take your time brushing and flossing

It might be obvious, but one of the easiest ways to whiten your teeth is to make sure you're spending the recommended time brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis to make the most of your daily brushing. Brushing with an electric toothbrush will help act as a teeth stain remover. Aim to brush for 2-3 minutes per day and don't forget to floss and use mouthwash.
