Coronation memorabilia FAQs

When is the Coronation of King Charles?

Saturday 6 May 2023 is the date of King Charles' Coronation. However, Charles has officially been the King since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in September last year.

You can expect to see many celebrations and services taking place over the Coronation weekend. This is why Monday 8 May 2023 is a Bank Holiday to give everyone a long weekend to join in.

There's the traditional ceremony on Saturday and a Coronation Concert broadcast live at Windsor Castle on Sunday. People are also encouraged to share Coronation food and drink with neighbours during The Coronation Big Lunch. Plus, take part in a spot of volunteering in their local area as part of The Big Help Out.

Where will the Coronation happen?

The Coronation of King Charles III is set to take place in London's Westminster Abbey. Just like the Monarchs before him in a royal tradition dating back over 900 years.

What does the Coronation involve?

King Charles' Coronation is set to be a similar, but simpler ceremony compared to his predecessors. As Buckingham Palace has said that "the Coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry."

Conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the ceremony will start with Charles reading the Coronation oath. This is to confirm his acceptance of becoming King.

The Archbishop will be asking His Majesty to govern the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations with law and justice while maintaining Christianity in the nation. King Charles will then hold the Sovereign's sceptre, rod and orb while sitting in the Coronation Chair. The King will then be anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop, placing the crown of St Edward on the King's head, too.
