Fans of Victoria Wood and her famous show Dinnerladies will be delighted to hear that there will be a new documentary on our screens very soon! The three-part documentary named 'The The Dinnerladies Diaries starts on Gold on Tuesday 13th March at 8pm features never before seen footage from the making of the show, including archive interview footage from Victoria with interviews from some of the stars of Dinnerladies.
Based in the canteen of a factory in Manchester, the sitcom, which ran from 1998 to 2000 was written entirely by Victoria. Amongst the hilarious cast, did you notice what a lot of them had in common?
If you’re thinking you recognise most of the cast from soaps, you’re right, as it has been revealed that the much-loved comedian who tragically lost her battle with cancer in 2016, thought that soap stars were amongst the best actors in the country.
Victoria Wood was in awe of the 'Coronation Street' cast and enlisted many of them for her show. In a new documentary, the comic appears in previously unseen footage, and said: "When 'Corrie' was first on, their casting was just incredibly brilliant.
"They've had some wonderful people and I have drawn from that pool.
"There have been so many people on The Street. It's just a really good programme. When I heard a whisper Thelma Barlow was leaving I pounced on her."
Thelma wasn’t the only actor with links to Corrie though! Actress Anne Reid played Ken Barlow’s first wife Valerie Barlow who is mother to Peter and Susan. She remained on the cobbles from 1961 to 1971 after she died from an electric shock.
Can you remember Glenda who delivered the bread? You might recognise actress Sue Cleaver as Eileen Grimshaw? Another great actress is Downton’s Joanne Froggatt who was also in Corrie at one point as Zoe Tattersall, but do you remember her from Dinnerladies as the work experience student Sigourney?
Actor Steve Hunison is most famous for his various TV and film roles such as playing Eddie Windass in Coronation Street but do you remember him as Steve Greengrass in Dinnerladies when he broke his leg slipping on some Orange Juice?
One of Dinnerladies main characters was Anita, played by Corrie star Shobna Gulati who was famous for playing Sunita in the soap. Tony Martin the catering manager in Dinnerladies played Janice Battersby's boyfriend Roger Stiles in Corrie.
Maxine Peake who was Twinkle in the show appeared in Coronation Street as Belinda Peach when Fred Elliot tried to match up his son Ashley with Belinda at the Freshco ball! Then you have Stan who is now Laurel's dad Doug in Emmerdale!

We were heartbroken to learn of Victoria's death in April 2016, aged just 62. We've been big fans of her work since she first appeared on New Faces back in 1974, through her partnership with the brilliant Julie Walters on Acorn Antiques, and of course in the heart-warming Dinnerladies.
It’s more than a year since we lost Victoria, and she’s very much missed by fans of her live shows and Dinnerladies. TV Channel Gold has also announced it will make a documentary programme about the much-loved sitcom using exclusive backstage diaries belonging to Victoria – so we’re looking forward to seeing that in 2018!
