13 steps to creating a sweet-smelling home

Make your home smell clean and fresh with these easy natural air freshener recipes, using everything from spices to vinegar.

1. Make an air freshener with spices

Add a mixture of allspice, cloves, orange peel, cinnamon and ginger to a pan of boiling water and leave to simmer for an instant blast of homely fragrance that has a hint of Christmas about it. Great for creating a welcoming fragrance when guests pop round!

2. Reduce bad smells with vinegar

Vinegar is brilliant at getting rid of smells and you most likely have a bottle lurking in the back of your cupboards anyway so it’s cheap and easy to get hold of. Just fill a few containers half full with vinegar and then leave them placed around the offending room.

If your house smells of cigarette smoke too, douse a hand towel in vinegar and wring it before walking through the house swinging it to get rid of the whiff.

3. Make your chopping board smell nice with baking soda

If your wooden or plastic chopping board has a strange pong, cover the board with bicarbonate of soda and water and let it set for about half an hour. Then swill off with some hot soapy water and a squirt of lemon for a board that smells like it’s straight out of the shop.

4. Make your microwave smell nice with some lemon

Microwaves can quickly develop a strong scent, so to freshen the air add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to a bowl of water and microwave for 10 minutes. Then leave the bowl in there for a further ten minutes before wiping down the microwave with a clean cloth dipped in a bit of the lemony mixture.

5. Stop your fridge smelling with vanilla

By popping in a cotton ball soaked in vanilla or an open container of ground coffee.

6. Make a potpourri wreath

Potpourri adds an instant hit of fragrance to a room so why not make it into a decorative feature by creating a festive potpourri wreath? Just brush some glue over the surface of a green Styrofoam wreath and cover every spot with potpourri. Then leave it to dry and add a wide bow and ribbon ready to display pride of place in your home.

If you need an especially fragrant home one day too, say if guests are coming round or you’re showing round prospective buyers, simmer some potpourri in a slow cooker for the day.

7. Remove burnt smells

Forgotten to take dinner out of the oven? Get rid of burnt smells by sprinkling a little salt onto the burnt mess.

8. Make a bathroom air freshener - naturally

To freshen up your bathroom don’t bother with aerosols; just cut a couple of lemons in half and place them cut side up in a dish in the corner of the bathroom.

9. Make a natural air freshener with this easy recipe

Just by adding about 1oz of water to a small spray bottle along with up to 10 drops of your favourite essential oils, such as lavender or chamomile. Use this to freshen up smelly upholstery or around the bedroom to help you drift off more easily. If you need quite a powerful scent to banish strong odours, eucalyptus is a good choice.

10. Use cat litter to make your cupboard smell clean

It might sound a bit odd, but you can get rid of damp and stale cupboard smells by popping a box of clean cat litter in there which should soak up all the unsavoury smells.

11. Use tights to make a herb scent bag

Make an impromptu scent bag using your tights! Just fill up an old pair of nylon tights with your favourite dried herbs, such as lavender, lemon or cinnamon and then tie up at each end and place in the corner of a room.

If you want something a little more decorative, try sewing up two pieces of gingham or pretty looking fabric and filling this with your herbs. Add a sweet little strand of ribbon and then hang off a door or picture hook.

12. Purify your air with houseplants

Once you’ve done the all important job of getting rid of household smells, keep the air pure and fresh by displaying plants throughout your house. Bamboo, Aloe Vera and azaleas are all known to be great at cleaning up the air.
