The weakest link

Fans of The Weakest Link will be happy to hear that the popular game show is making a return.

It first ran from 2000 - 2012 with Anne Robinson as its host, but with Anne now presenting the newest series of Countdown, comedian Romesh Ranganathan will be the shows new host.

The new version of the show will be a celebrity version, with a new celebrity line up featuring in each episode.

"Anne was an amazing host and to step into her shoes is an anxiety-inducing privilege, I'm hoping we've found a way to make both the fans of the show happy as well as bringing a new audience to it," said Romesh.

"The fact of the matter is that the format is bullet-proof, the quiz is amazing, so if you're into the quiz, you'll get the Weakest Link, you'll get what you're after, and it's just me doing it my own way, it's got a different flavour to it - Anne brought her own flavour to it and I'm bringing my own flavour to it."

If you can't quite remember, the game involves nine contestants answering general knowledge questions that they must answer correctly to remain in the game.

The object of the game is to create a chain of nine correct answers in a row to earn an increasing amount of money within a time limit. One wrong answer breaks the chain and any money earned within that particular chain is lost. However, before their question is asked (but after their name is called), a contestant can say "bank" which will bank the current amount of money earned in any chain to make it safe, and after saying "bank" the chain will start afresh.

At the end of each round, the players then vote one contestant, "the weakest link", out of the game.

The Weakest link was one of the BBC's most popular shows, airing in over 100 countries at the height of its success.

It was last on our screens in 2017 when Anne Robinson hosted a special Children In Need episode.

Weakest Link begins at 18:10 GMT on Saturday 18 December on BBC One.
