Netflix's new Bridgerton spinoff Queen Charlotte tells the prequel story to a young queen, (played by Golda Rousheuvel in the current series).

The Regency era hit is already due a season three, which is expected to arrive in early 2023, and thanks to the popularity of seasons 1 and 2 it is expected that we'll be treated to adaptations of the entire eight novels by Julia Quinn, each centering on a different Bridgerton sibling's quest to find love.

However, in this throwback series we're transported back to when Charlotte met King George, and the great societal shift that this began, leading to the creation of the Ton. The show also explores the younger lives of Lady Danbury (played by Adjoa Andoh in Bridgerton) and Lady Violet Bridgerton, the matriarch of the Bridgerton family (Ruth Gemmell).

Back in September 2022, Netflix shared their first look at Queen Charlotte, showing the moment Charlotte met the King (played by Corey Mylchreest) for the first time. The young royal is played by Line of Duty star India Amarteifio and we think she does a fantastic job of portraying the queen.

In the clip, we see a feisty young Charlotte trying to escape the palace walls after being betrothed to a future king she hasn't even seen yet.

Arsema Thomas is taking on the role of young Lady Danbury, and Connie Jenkins-Greig will play a young Violet Ledger (Bridgerton to be). Michelle Fairley, whom you may also recognise from Game of Thrones, will also star as King George's mother, the Dowager Princess Augusta.

When is Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story going to be released?

The show was released onto Netflix on May 4 and you can stream it now.

Queen Charlotte plot

The official synopsis of the story reads: "Centred on Queen Charlotte's rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen's marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton."

Unlike previous Bridgerton series, a lot of this one is based on facts written in the history books about Queen Charlotte. It's thought she was the first ever black Queen of England after she married a young King George III of England.
