We've chosen some of the best podcasts we're indulging in at the moment - if ever there was a time we wanted to be transported to another planet, now's it.

Personal favourites are Katie Piper and her interviews with some of the most inspiring people we've encountered, The Night Sky for taking us to a whole new world every week, and Mel G is Quilting for pure charm and relaxing chatter.

Katie Piper's Extraordinary People1 of 10

Katie Piper's Extraordinary People

Katie Piper is an extraordinary person herself, having overcome an acid attack by an ex boyfriend which left her with serious facial burns, to becoming a champion of charity and campaigning. In her podcast series she talks to others who've turned adversity into something positive – we challenge you to keep a dry eye while you listen to this podcast. From a whistle-blower policewoman, to a drag queen, plus Prue Leith and Nadiya Hussain, there's an amazing range of extraordinary people to discover. At the time of writing there were 42 episodes you can catch up on.

My Time Capsule2 of 10

My Time Capsule

This new weekly podcast features a host of celebrity guests, all of whom are asked one question: "What are the five things from your life that you would put into a time capsule?" It's a good question – and makes you think what you'd put into your own time capsule. Hosted by actor Michael Fenton Stevens (you might have seen him in My Family, Only Fools and Horses, and The Crown), the first episode featured the fabulous Stephen Fry. We like this podcast because of the range of celebrities featured – from the Rev Richard Coles, to Shane Richie, and Anthony Head – and the depth to which they talk about some of the favourite things in their lives. What they choose to bury can be quite surprising.

Mel Giedroyc is Quilting3 of 10

Mel Giedroyc is Quilting

Warning: this podcast will make you want to take up quilting – if you don't already. It's a charming view of the world from one of our favourite Great British Bake Off presenters (we still miss her and Sue) Mel Giedroyc and her radio presenter chum, Andy Bush. Each week they cut up fabric squares to feature in one big quilt; although, as they freely admit, not a great deal of sewing actually gets done, as they're so busy chatting. It's like overhearing two friends on the bus, and we love it.

The Sky at Night4 of 10

The Sky at Night

A beautiful and fascinating podcast that's ideal for listening to after supper; sit back and gaze and the stars yourself while you listen. It features all the latest stargazing news, plus special features – the most recent episode celebrates 30 years of the Hubble Telescope. Where would we be without Hubble? It's revolutionised astronomy and quite literally changed how we view space.

Countryfile5 of 10

Countryfile

Join the Countryfile team for a weekly foray into the countryside, meeting different fascinating guests each week. Recent stars include author, naturalist and broadcaster Tim Dee, and the latest episodes include a ramble in Dorset, a reading from The Amateur Poacher by Richard Jeffries, and a visit to a Bristolian community farm. If the Sunday night show just isn't enough for you, then you'll love this podcast.

Desert Island discs6 of 10

Desert Island Discs

Luckily all of the past Desert Island Discs episodes are now available to download, so you won't miss out on the best part of the week. Currently we're re-living classic episodes featuring the likes of poet John Cooper Clarke, and Albert and Michel Roux from 1986, plus latest instalments from actor Rupert Everett, screenwriter Heidi Thomas, and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. Quite frankly we could stream this all day long and not get bored.

Julieu2019s Library7 of 10

Julie’s Library

Welcome to a new podcast from our favourite, Julie Andrews, where we take a seat in her library and discuss some of her much loved books. It's very much family oriented, so look forward to discussions on Bears Don't Eat Egg Sandwiches, and Marilyn's Monster, plus special messages from the authors.

BBC Earth8 of 10

BBC Earth

If you're a fan of the BBC's naturalist programmes, then this earthly podcast is a must. Whether you love sea creatures or safari animals, adventures on land or sea, each episode brings you another amazing corner of the planet we call home. Attention-grabbing episodes include 'My best friend was an octopus', 'The rhino who flew 10,000 miles', and 'Frozen squirrels and the human brain'. Prepared to be amazed.

Women's Hour - Table Manners with Jessie Ware and mum Lennie Ware9 of 10

Women's Hour - Table Manners with Jessie Ware and mum Lennie Ware

We were fascinated by this episode of Women's Hour, which looked at the challenges and joys of working with your mother. Featuring Jessie and Lennie Ware, who discuss how working on their own podcast together has affected their personal relationship – the good and the bad.

You're Dead To Me10 of 10

You're Dead To Me

They call this 'The history podcast for people who don't like history… and those who do.' And that sums it up nicely. From the history of chocolate, to Eleanor of Aquitaine, 1920s Paris, Mary Shelley, and the Neanderthals, this pod covers all aspects of history in an interesting and comedic manner; host Greg Jenner is joined by other comedians to bring history to life every week.
