Whether it's a new Downton Abbey film or the latest Bridgerton book, we don't half love a period drama, especially one that's based on real events. So when we found out an Emily Brontë film was being released, we couldn't wait to find out more.

We've all heard of the iconic novelist, Emily Brontë, but how much do we really know about her life? This biopic will follow the story of the real Emily Brontë, the turbulent love that inspired her stories and what life was like for her and her family living in the Yorkshire Moors during Victorian times.

Emily cast

British actress Emma Mackay will be staring as Emily Brontë. You'll have no doubt seen Emma before in the Netflix series, Sex Education or Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile adaptation.

Alongside Emma is the fantastic Adrian Dunbar, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as William Weightman, Alexandra Dowling as Charlotte Brontë and Amelia Gething as Anne Brontë.

What is Emily about?

Emily was considered somewhat of a rebel back in 1847, at a time when writing was considered strictly off-limits to women. The film follows her journey to womanhood, finding her voice, her relationships with her sisters Charlotte and Anne and her forbidden lover, William Weightman.

Emily and her sisters, Charlotte Brontë (most famous for writing Jane Eyre) and Anne Brontë, author of Agnes Grey were given a liberal and academic education following the death of their mother. The sisters found enjoyment and escape in writing stories, publishing under male pseudonyms in order to be taken seriously.

The film follows Emily's life in the run up to her writing Wuthering Heights before her untimely death, aged just 30.
