This year Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki will be taking over the role of Princess of Wales from Emma Corrin for the final two series of The Crown.

The hit Netflix series has followed the royal family through several time periods, using different actors to play its characters as the show spans from the 1940s to the 1980s.

Princess Diana was introduced in series 4, with a rave performance from Emma that spanned Diana's life from age 16 to 28. Now it will be Elizabeth's turn to take on the role.

"When Peter Morgan asked me to do it I was quite overwhelmed, but I've had a little bit of time to process it now," the actress revealed. "I think that I'm actually just incredibly excited to do it, and she's such an incredibly important figure."

You may recognise Elizabeth for her role as Jed Marshall in the 2016 BBC drama The Night Manager. She has also appeared in films such as Widows, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and will be appearing in Tenet this August.

Discussing how she felt about taking on the role of Diana, Elizabeth said, "She was such a remarkable human being and so the idea of stepping into it is daunting but very exciting.

"Princess Diana's spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one."

We loved seeing Elizabeth in the role in a new photo released August showing a subdued Diana.

Who else will be appearing in the final two series of The Crown?

The final two series of the royal drama are expected to cover the 1990s and early 2000s.

The final two series of the show will cover the break-up of Princess Diana and Prince Charles' marriage and her death in 1997.

It's also expected that the last two series will cover the deaths of Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother, seven weeks apart in 2002, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee that summer.

Jonathan Pryce will be taking over from Tobiaz Menzies as the Duke of Edinburgh.

Imelda Staunton has previously been named as the next Queen (replacing Olivia Colman), and Lesley Manville has been cast as Princess Margaret (portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter up to series 4).

When will series 5 of The Crown be released?

With season five filming in June 2021, The Crown season 5 will not arrive on Netflix until 2022. Cameras aren't expected to begin rolling on the sixth and final season until 2022 as well, so fans of the show still have that to look forward to.
