Pam’s career really got going in the early Nineties when she took on the role of Ma Larkin in ITV series The Darling Buds of May alongside David Jason and Catherine Zeta Jones. She then appeared in lots of TV dramas including Meantime, Connie, Hardwicke House, Rosemary and Thyme, Oranges are not the Only Fruit, Middlemarch, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Our Mutual Friend, Jane Eyre, Where the Heart is and Paradise Heights.

Pam Ferris in Matilda

In 1996 Pam took on the role of the truly terrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull, in a film version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. It involved wearing a less-than-glamorous tracksuit, yellowed teeth and doing lots of shouting at small children! Miss Trunchbull is famed for her creative punishments, and particularly memorable scenes involved Pam swinging a little girl around by her plaits, and forcing a boy to eat an entire chocolate cake in one sitting.

Pam Ferris in Harry Potter

She also found fame with the younger generation thanks to her part in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Here she played the stern and cruel Aunt Marge, who Harry accidentally blows up into a balloon. We feel she had it coming!

Pam Ferris on Call the Midwife

But of course, our favourite of all of Pam’s roles has to be stern, no-nonsense but loveable Sister Evangelina in Call the Midwife, who she played from 2012 – 2016. Read about the firm friendship between Pam Ferris and co-star Jenny Agutter here.

Did Pam Ferris die on Call the Midwife?

Did Pam Ferris have a stroke?

No silly, that was (thankfully) her character Sister Evangelina, in March 2016, rather than Pam herself.
