If you could do a potentially life-saving health check in the time it takes to pick up your groceries, why wouldn’t you? Thanks to a new initiative from Tesco and the British Heart Foundation, shoppers can now get a free blood pressure test in store, and it takes just 10 minutes from start to finish.
The idea is simple: while you’re already out doing the weekly shop, you can pop into the pharmacy, have a quick, private check, and leave knowing your numbers. No long waits, no fuss — just a small stop that could make a big difference to your health.

A health check between the aisles
The initiative has launched during Heart Month (February) and is all about convenience. You can simply walk in (or book ahead if you prefer) at more than 350 Tesco Pharmacy locations across the UK and have your blood pressure checked in about 10 minutes — no GP appointment, no fuss. Tests are carried out in a private consultation room, and staff explain your numbers clearly before you leave.
It’s particularly important because high blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms. In fact, experts estimate millions of UK adults could be living with it unknowingly. Left untreated, it raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes — but caught early, it can usually be managed with lifestyle tweaks or medication.
Why it matters
According to Bryan Williams, chief scientific and medical officer at the BHF, around one in three adults in the UK has high blood pressure, and many don’t realise it. That’s why quick, accessible checks in everyday places — like your local supermarket — can be so valuable.
And Tesco says that’s exactly the point: making health checks feel as routine as doing your weekly shop. Pharmacy teams have also received specialist “Let’s Talk” training to help them discuss sensitive health topics, including heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes, in a reassuring way.

Little steps, big difference
The campaign is part of Tesco’s wider health charity partnership with the Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK, which encourages small everyday actions that can improve long-term wellbeing. Alongside the in-store checks, shoppers can also find heart-healthy recipes online and in Tesco Magazine, featuring lower-salt and lower-fat meal ideas.
There’s even a fundraising element: for a limited time, customers can round up their shopping total to the nearest £1 at self-service tills, with donations going to the partner charities.
The bottom line
If you’re already heading to Tesco, adding a blood pressure check to your trip could be one of the easiest health wins you make all year. It’s quick, free, and could give you peace of mind — or an early heads-up if you need support.
