After showing us the sights of Merthyr Tydfil, beloved Welsh stars Ruth Jones and Steve Speirs are teaming up once again - both on screen and behind the scenes - for a brand-new BBC comedy that promises laughter, warmth and a touching look at friendship in life’s later chapters.

The as-yet-untitled series, commissioned by BBC Wales and BBC Comedy, will explore the ups and downs of relationships in middle age, centring on two strangers who strike up an unexpected friendship after meeting at a knee trauma clinic.

Clive, a retired teacher, is 60 and recently widowed. Shelley-Ann, a 55-year-old environmental officer, is navigating a bitter divorce. As they heal their physical injuries, both find themselves mending emotional scars too, with some humour along the way!

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy has called the series "instantly special", saying that his team “were genuinely weak at the knees" when they were sent the script.

"It’s a rare thing to read something that feels so instantly special, and we cannot wait to see it come to life. Having comedy powerhouses like Ruth and Steve choose to bring this to the BBC is a real privilege, and we’re hugely grateful for their trust.”

Ruth Jones, who co-wrote and co-stars in the show, said: “I'm so grateful to the BBC for commissioning our new series. Steve and I are old friends and working with him is always a thrill. Can’t wait.”

Steve Speirs added: “Thanks to the team at the BBC for backing our new show. I’ve worked with Ruth for over 30 years and am really looking forward to doing it again!”

This isn’t the first time the pair have worked on a sitcom together. Ruth and Steve have been friends for more than three decades, most notably sharing the screen as Stella and Big Alan in Ruth Jones’ beloved Sky One comedy-drama Stella, set in the Rhondda Valleys.

They’ve also appeared together in specials such as A Child’s Christmases in Wales. Their long-standing friendship and creative partnership make this new BBC series an especially exciting reunion for fans.
