There’s a very special television event on the horizon – and it’s one that’s sure to have many of us reaching for the tissues.
A brand-new documentary, Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century, is set to mark what would have been the late monarch’s 100th birthday. And with a line-up of famous faces including Dame Helen Mirren, former US president Barack Obama and Sir David Attenborough, it promises to be a fitting and heartfelt tribute to the Queen Elizabeth.
The one-hour film will look back at the extraordinary life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, 2022, aged 96. As the nation’s longest-reigning monarch, she served as head of state for more than 70 years – a remarkable reign that saw Britain, and the world, change beyond recognition.
From her childhood during the Blitz to her unforgettable appearance alongside James Bond at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, the Queen witnessed – and often helped shape – some of the most significant moments of the 20th and 21st centuries. For many, she became a reassuring symbol of stability during times of uncertainty.

The documentary will blend moving archive footage with brand-new interviews from those who knew her, worked with her or were inspired by her. Alongside Dame Helen, Mr Obama and Sir David, viewers will also hear from actress Dame Sheila Hancock and Queen Camilla, who will share personal memories of the late monarch.
Catherine Catton, head of BBC factual entertainment and events, said: "Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century explores the life of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II through the lens of a century of change and offers an important reflection on how modern Britain has been shaped."
It’s set to be both a celebration and a reflection – not just on the life of one remarkable woman, but on an entire era that she came to define.
Dame Helen Mirren and the Queen
Dame Helen Mirren is perhaps best known for portraying Queen Elizabeth II on screen in the 2006 film The Queen, a performance that earned her an Academy Award. She later reprised her role as the monarch in the stage production The Audience. Through her work, Dame Helen developed a deep understanding and admiration for the late Queen, often speaking of her sense of duty and quiet strength.
Barack Obama and the Queen
During his presidency, Barack Obama met Queen Elizabeth II on several occasions, and the pair were said to share a warm rapport. One particularly memorable moment came during the 2011 state visit to the UK, when Mr Obama and the Queen shared a light-hearted exchange during a toast at Buckingham Palace. He has previously spoken of his admiration for her grace and the constancy she provided on the world stage.
Sir David Attenborough and the Queen

Sir David Attenborough, who also celebrates his 100th birthday this year, not only met the Queen many times over the decades, but also collaborated with her on projects celebrating the natural world. In 2018, the pair appeared together in a documentary conversation about the Buckingham Palace gardens, discussing trees planted by world leaders. Like the Queen, Sir David has dedicated his life to public service, and their shared commitment to the Commonwealth and the environment formed a natural bond.
