Bella Ramsey is set to lead Maya, a brand new six-part thriller for Channel 4, written and created by Daisy Haggard, who's best known for Breeders, Back To Life and Episodes.

The new drama is produced by Two Brothers, the company behind The Tourist and Fleabag, and follows the harrowing journey of a mother and daughter who are thrust into a witness protection programme to escape a deadly threat.

What is the new drama with Daisy Haggard about?

Forced to leave behind their life in London, Anna (played by Daisy Haggard) and her teenage daughter Maya (Bella Ramsey) must assume new identities and start fresh in a quiet, rural town. But as they attempt to adapt to their uncertain new life, the emotional scars from their past refuse to fade, while the menacing pursuit of two hitmen casts a dark shadow over their every move. As the hitmen close in on their trail, it becomes evident that the threat from Anna's past is far from over.

The thriller is said to have a "darkly comedic, atmospheric tone" whilst focusing on topics such as predatory male behaviour and the lengths a parent will go to protect their child.

"As Anna and Maya navigate their new world, the question remains: will the system protect them, will they ever truly be safe, or will they have to go to extraordinary lengths to protect themselves?" teases the synopsis from Channel 4.

Creator Daisy Haggard (Boat Story, Uncle) will play Anna. Speaking of the project, she said, “I am so excited that we finally get to share Maya with the world! It has been brewing and building in my mind for a long time, and I feel extremely fortunate to be able to shine a light on these kinds of stories. I can’t wait to go on this journey with the brilliant and bold Channel 4.”

Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, Time) is playing Maya. This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny and scarily dark", the actor said. "Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty and I’m so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy’s Anna.”
