Channel 4’s Falling may tell an emotional and complicated love story between a Catholic priest and a nun, but viewers are just as captivated by the drama’s stunning filming locations.

The six-part series, created by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne as his “first ever love story”, stars Keeley Hawes as Anna and Paapa Essiedu as David and was filmed across Bristol and Wales, using everything from busy city streets to historic religious buildings.

Here’s where Falling was really filmed.

Where was Falling filmed?

Falling was primarily filmed in Bristol, Cardiff and across South Wales.

Unlike many TV dramas that focus on Bristol’s postcard landmarks, Falling takes a more understated approach.

Writer Jack Thorne, who grew up in the city, wanted the series to spotlight areas that rarely get attention on screen. Rather than centring famous tourist spots, the drama spends much of its time in residential neighbourhoods and community spaces that feel authentic to David’s world.

That more grounded style helps Falling feel personal and realistic throughout.

Where is Anna’s convent in Falling?

Many of Anna’s convent scenes were shot at Ewenny Priory in Bridgend, Wales.

Dating back to the 1100s, the historic building is known for its striking Norman architecture and peaceful gardens. It’s also one of the oldest locations used in the series, helping give Anna’s storyline its calm and reflective atmosphere. Throughout the drama, viewers can spot the priory’s stone archways, church interiors and scenic grounds.

The location has become increasingly popular with TV productions in recent years, with series including A Discovery of Witches and Young Sherlock also filming there.

Where was David’s church filmed?

Cardiff was another major filming base for Falling.

St German’s Church in the city was used as David’s church, while St David’s Shopping Centre appears during one of Anna’s rare moments away from convent life.

The production also reportedly used quieter areas across South Wales for scenes connected to Anna’s religious community.

More Falling filming locations

Not every location in Falling was disguised for TV.

Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier appears as itself in the series, while Golden Valley Playing Fields in Nailsea was used for some outdoor moments between Anna and David.

Several indoor scenes are also believed to have been filmed at Bristol’s Bottle Yard Studios, which has hosted productions including Sherlock, Poldark and Wolf Hall.

All six episodes of Falling are available to stream on Channel 4.
