Legendary actress Catherine O’Hara has died aged 71, following a brief illness and after being taken to hospital in the early hours of Friday morning.
The beloved star of Home Alone, Beetlejuice and Schitt’s Creek passed away on Friday, January 30.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, emergency crews were called to O’Hara’s home at 4:48 am, Page Six reported. She was then taken to a nearby hospital, where she was said to be in “serious” condition.
No official cause of death has been announced.

O’Hara is survived by her husband of 33 years, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew, 31, and Luke, 29.
Earlier this month, the actress did not attend the Golden Globe Awards on January 11, despite being nominated for Best Supporting Performance by a Female Actor for her role in the Apple+ series The Studio. At the time, no reason was given for her absence.
Her most recent public appearance was on September 14, 2025, when she walked the red carpet alongside her husband at Apple TV’s Emmy party in West Hollywood.
Following the news of her death, emotional tributes poured in across social media from friends, colleagues and fans.

Her Home Alone co-star Macaulay Culkin shared an emotional message, saying: “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
Justin Theroux, who appeared alongside O’Hara in Beetlejuice, also paid tribute, posting: “Catherine, you will be so missed.”
“Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful,” O’Hara’s The Last Of Us co-star said. “There is less light in my world; this lucky world that had you will keep you always. Always.”
Friend Rita Wilson wrote, “Catherine O’Hara – a woman who was authentic and truthful in all she did. You saw it in her work, if you knew her you saw it in her life, and you saw it in her family.
“Bo, Luke and Matthew, our deepest sympathies. May Catherine rest in peace. May her memory be eternal.”
