What our tester thought...

If you've got a special birthday or anniversary around the corner, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel is the perfect place to celebrate. The service is impeccable, the rooms spacious and the attention to detail is a cut above the competition. I could wax lyrical about the breakfast buffet alone - I've never seen such an abundance of fresh juices, tropical fruit, mouth-watering cakes and pastries, and tempting cuts of meat and fish.

The Rib Room restaurant at the hotel is worth a visit aside from breakfast - we popped in for some nibbles and a glass of fizz, which got the weekend off to a flying start. Staff were attentive and you really felt that nothing was too much bother for them. The vegetarian options are rather thin on the ground, but the chef offered to make something special instead - especially kind on a busy Friday night.

We stayed for one night as part of the Cirque du Soleil package, and after freshening up in our enormous room, we headed downstairs for our private transfers to the Royal Albert Hall - we certainly felt like royalty. Not having to get on the sweaty Tube or battle the elements was such a luxury, and we were dropped right at the front door, and collected again later.

The package usually includes a slap-up three-course meal with Champagne at the concert hall, but we were unable to test this, heading straight to our seats instead. Our view was marvellous, and we could see every hair-raising twist and trick in the Cirque's new show Amaluna. I hadn't been to a Cirque du Soleil performance before but I had very high expectations, that weren't entirely met. For one thing, I was very surprised at the number of mistakes made by the cast (especially when compared to touring circuses I've seen in the past), which made me feel very nervous throughout.

The clowning was rather tedious, as was the soundtrack, although many of the acrobatic tricks were seriously impressive. I'd give the show itself 3 stars, while the hotel package was worth more - we felt like true VIPs, especially arriving back to our room to find soothing music playing and slippers provided as part of the turn down service.

There's no doubt that it's a pricey treat, but you can really see where your money has gone in this little taste of heaven. Waking up in swanky Knightsbridge, just moments away from some of the capital's finests museums is the icing on the cake.
