Going out: Autumn 2014

Going out: Autumn 2014

It's too easy to crank up the heating and sit in front of the telly. So here are a few ideas to keep you active types occupied over the coming weeks:

Godinton House autumn workshops, Kent

Against the backdrop of the beautiful gardens of Godinton, learn all about growing autumn fruit, veg and flowers, and tips to keep on top of the garden this season. Grow Your Own, Sep 27, 9.30am-2.30pm and Autumn Garden Tasks, Oct 4, 9.30am-2.30pm are run by Head Gardener Viv Hunt and Lecturer Fiona Abrahams. Courses cost £55, including light lunch, refreshments, and coffee on arrival. Visit www.godintonhouse.co.uk

Charity Craft Fair, Caerhays Castle, Cornwall

The Vean at Caerhays Castle will host its autumn Craft Fair on October 3 this year, from 10am-6pm. Organisers have also selected the British Legion as its charity of choice for 2014. So whether you're a felt fan or potty for pottery, enjoy the day in the knowledge that your precious pennies will be put to good use. We also wouldn't want to miss the flower arranging demonstrations or the Elemental Gin. Visit www.thevean.co.uk

Silver Sunday

October 5 is Silver Sunday, and is all about looking out for anyone over the age of 65. There are 3.8 million people who fall into that age bracket in Britain, and it's about time we made sure none of us are left feeling lonely. Indeed, there are now more people in this country aged over 65 than under 18, many of whom are isolated by eyesight or hearing problems. So let's set an example by paying some visits, doing some odd jobs, and making a phone call or two. www.silversunday.org.uk

The Knitting & Stitching Show, Alexandra Palace

October 8-12 sees the return of the Knitting & Stitching Show to London, and this year the Stitch-by-Stitch campaign will be getting us all involved in trying a new knitting, crochet or beadwork technique, with the help of leading craft experts. The five day event is designed with all abilities in mind, so you can attend lectures, workshops and shop to your heart's content - for all manner of crafty bits and bobs. Adult £16 (£13 advance), Child £7 (£6 advance). Visit www.theknittingandstitchingshow.com/london

Strictly Come Dancing: The Live UK Tour

Tickets go on sale at 9am, this coming Monday, September 29! The show is back from Jan 16-Feb 18, 2015; coreographed by the highly talented Craig Revel Horwood, who celebrates his 50th birthday in the New Year. Who says getting older means slowing down, eh? As he said to us earlier this week, 'keeping busy keeps you young.'
