You think you know spa breaks

We all need a bit of time to unwind from the stresses of day-to-day life and a spa break is a great way to recharge. They’ve come a long way in the past decade and now offer an enormous range of treatments, expert consultations and fitness classes to suit everyone. Whether it’s at home or abroad, there are plenty of ways to take your perfect escape – and they don’t have to break  the bank.

The original spa

For a sense of history, head to Bath where you can now enjoy a dip in Britain’s only naturally-warm,
mineral-rich waters, just as the Romans did. There are both indoor and outdoor pools to experience, as well as aroma steam rooms. For total indulgence, you can also book treatments including ‘watsu’, which involves being gently stretched and massaged in the water. Prices start at £35 for a two-hour session in the water.

Shape up

Love dancing? An all-inclusive break at Ragdale Hall, in Melton Mowbray, offers a huge range of new moves. Try ballet toning, Bollywood, or Zumba and return home glowing with good health. Plus, you can enjoy a 40-minute treatment, other spa facilities and three meals a day. A two-night break from Thursday to Saturday, November 26-28 costs from £317pp based on two people sharing a room, or with a £65 single supplement.

Fancy learning a new skill? At Champneys, in Henlow, the Strength and Grace yoga retreats show how great yoga is for the body and mind. Classes are suitable for all levels and are taken – where possible – in the beautiful gardens. You’ll enjoy five sessions over two days, combining toning yoga, meditation and breathing exercises. You’ll also take away yoga DVDs and CDs to use at home. The course costs from £299pp, including one night’s accommodation, all meals and unlimited use of the facilities.

Unusual dining

For an atmospheric break, try Dalhousie Castle Hotel and Aqueous Spa, outside Edinburgh. After a spa treatment you and your partner can tuck into Champagne and chocs in your room, then head to the dungeon to eat! Costs £300 per couple, valid Sunday-Thursday.

Sunday special

Sundays are for relaxing and what better way than with a special spa break? St Brides Spa Hotel, in Pembrokeshire, has a Sunday night offer (from October 1 to April 30) including accommodation, breakfast, a 90-minute session in the thermal suite and hydrotherapy pool, access to the fitness suite and a 25-minute treatment. The best bit? The hotel’s infinity pool, perched on the cliff edges for truly inspiring views of Carmarthen Bay. The Sunday Spa Escape costs from £200 per night.

On the edge of the Pennines, in Yorkshire, sits the secluded Titanic Spa. At the UK’s first eco spa you’ll find some top quality treatments using products from Elemis, Decleor and Neom Organics. Various packages (both day and night) are available and all include the Spa’s signature heat and ice experience, which features a herbal infusion room to aid easy breathing, cooling plunge pool to refresh your skin and relaxing sauna. Prices start from £129pp for an overnight break including meals.

Escape to the Highlands

Treat yourself to a spa day at the Atholl Palace Hotel in the Perthshire Highlands. The hotel’s Lavender Spa has great views of the countryside, making it ideal for a revitalising break. Its natural spring waters have been attracting visitors since 1884. These days, you can treat yourself to some great treatments, from a hot lava shell massage to an anti-ageing facial. Spa days start from £65pp and include lunch and one treatment.

Have a health kick

Head to Healthouse Las Dunas in southern Spain (15 minutes from Marbella) for a weekend to recharge your batteries!
