What they say: ‘Great British tradition meets effortless relaxation at The Spa at Oulton Hall .…the UK’s elegant 18th Century Mansion Spa Hotel. Located on the outskirts of Leeds and home to award winning cuisine, a finely groomed 27 hole golf course, unrivalled service and a state-of-the-art spa; Oulton Hall is the perfect choice for those seeking a little leisurely beauty steeped in Great British tradition.

What our reviewer says: I was a little anxious whilst journeying to Oulton Hall, as based on the impressive information in the press pack we received, our expectations for the hotel and spa were high. I was worried we might feel underwhelmed on arrival, so I was very happy when this didn’t happen! As we entered the long driveway up to the hotel, what impressed us most was how green the landscape surrounding the hotel was …. being autumn, the trees and fallen leaves were a glorious colour. Then came the hotel mansion itself – impressive to look at on approach and a grandiose front door and lobby. So far, expectations were merited!

The staff were courteous and helpful. Although we arrived too early to enter the room (rooms are generally ready from 3pm) we were invited to leave our luggage with reception, use the leisure facilities and lunch at one of the two restaurants belonging to the hotel, The Claret Jug. It is at this point that must inform all golf lovers, that if you would like a golfing retreat, then this hotel merits your consideration. The Claret Jug is part of the golfing part to the hotel and overlooks the beautiful grounds and golfing course ….so for an informal but comfortable lunch overlooking beautiful grounds, this is the restaurant for you. Light lunch options start from £4.95. The quality and presentation of the food is high, so this restaurant did not disappoint.

Once we were able to enter our room (a superior double) we were delighted with the size and amenities available - rooms are newly decorated in light modern style with en suite bathroom with shower and bath, with tea and coffee making facilities, free WIFI, toiletries and the like. The room was spotless and so comfortable! There was a spot-lighting option too, which made the room feel extra cosy …..

Next stop, the leisure facilities and spa. The leisure facilities boasts all you would need and expect (including steam room), although the sauna wasn’t as intense as one would hope and the pool, medium size. This all said, you come to Oulton Hall to mainly to relax and the steam room and jacuzzi made up for the sauna and pool.

As regards the spa, which is part and parcel with the leisure facilities, the treatment rooms are relaxing and tranquil. My husband described his Fit For Business Back Ritual with ESP (deep massage followed by a purifying back mask) said it was one of the best massages he’s ever had! He thoroughly recommends this to anyone who needs tension released from their back area. The back mask was a really good finishing touch, helping the effects of the massage to last longer.

As for me, usually I’d opt for a massage but I liked the look of the GELeration Hand Spa Ritual and thought it was time to pamper my hands for a change. The write up for the ritual claims it is ‘a relaxing hand exfoliation, massage and moisturise including cuticle care and a nail shape. Your fingers will be finished perfectly with Jessica's long lasting GEL polish’ and I have to say, the write-up delivered. I was able to choose from a wide range of ‘Jessica GEL colour’ and the therapist styled my nails to the desired shape. The nail GEL was then applied perfectly and to conclude, a soothing and relaxing hand massage, using some heavenly products!

To conclude the evening was dinner at the award-winning restaurant, the Calverley Grill restaurant, ‘which uses only fine and fresh local produce to bring guests an opulent, mouth-watering evening meal at the heart of the hotel’. Starters are priced from £7.00 and Mains from £14.00. As menu’s change, I won’t go into a preamble about our choices but will say with conviction, in this restaurant, you get what you pay for! The food is presented artfully and the ingredients are to a high standard. On the second night of staying, I decided to opt for a vegetarian main and was not left wanting… even my husband will, albeit begrudgingly, admit he wish he’d chosen mine!

The staff at the Calverley Grill were very professional and attentive, with one waitress offering to let us try two wines we were debating between, having before recommended the one she thought we’d prefer. Needless to say, her recommendation was correct and we were happy with our choice.

Our second day (not part of our press package, the price quoted is for a one night Luxury Spa Break, including treatment and evening meal) started with a warm and cold buffet breakfast at the Calverley Grill, with an excellent selection and attentive staff, who make sure your cup is never left empty. Whilst we had every intention of going to the gym, we ended up (feeling almost compelled),  relaxing around the fabulous hotel (the paintings and building are genuinely beautiful and interesting, especially when you delve into the history of it all).

Conclusion: This hotel met our expectations and more. If you want a relaxing retreat, be it with a spot of golf or spa indulgence thrown in, then this is the hotel for you. It’s not the cheapest hotel you’ll stay in but you’ll get what you pay for. With plenty of all-year-round offers, you should find a stay package to meet most budgets ….after all, when it comes to a treat now and then, we’re all  worth it!
