Retreat and relax in a Suffolk spa

Retreat and relax in a Suffolk spa

Now more popular than ever, a spa is an ideal place to indulge yourself, relax and unwind.
I visited the Bedford Lodge Hotel and Spa in Newmarket, Suffolk, with a friend. Booked in for a one-night stay with breakfast and evening meal, plus use of the spa facilities, a hot stones massage and a healthy lunch in the spa lounge, it was such a relaxing weekend we didn’t want to leave!
We were greeted in person by a member of the hotel’s concierge team (a very nice touch). Our room was a tastefully furnished twin-bedded room with huge plumped-up pillows and duvets, comfy chairs, cable TV, Wi-Fi and all the usual services, such as hairdryer, iron, Molton Brown toiletries, luxury towels, a range of teas, coffee, hot chocolate, bottled water and lavender-flavoured biscuits! Hotel services included a dentist, doctor and chemist!
Of course being Newmarket there is a strong horseracing connection and our room had a lovely view over the training stables. We enjoyed looking at the horses and observing their routine. Situated in three acres of secluded rose gardens next to paddocks and training stables, the racing heritage theme can be seen throughout the hotel.
Bedford Lodge Hotel is very impressive with a superb frontage. It was originally a Georgian hunting lodge built for the Sixth Duke of Bedford in the 18th century, converted into a hotel in the 1940s and has recently been awarded the highly prestigious 4 RED Stars by the AA.
Our evening meal in The Squire’s Restaurant was delicious and the staff were very relaxed and welcoming, managing to combine professional with friendly. It was busy, too, and is open to non-residents. The Roxanna Bar is perfect for pre- or post-dinner drinks in grand but relaxed surroundings.  Like a lot of top-quality hotels, they use only the finest seasonal ingredients and wherever possible source all their produce locally
The hotel also houses the Edge Health and Fitness club with a pool, dance studio, gym, spa bath, sauna and steam room.
Across the grounds is the gorgeous spa, housed in the Victorian part of the complex.

A very short walk across the grounds, we were made to feel very special at the spa and even though there was a bit of a mix-up with timings (entirely our own fault) the staff were courteous and accommodating. We were then shown the facilities and left to indulge!!

Just the smell of the spa is enough to relax you. Warm and inviting, a big fluffy robe and mules are provided. Facilities include a steam room, sauna, relaxation room (my favourite), hydrotherapy pool with five water experiences and heated seats overlooking the pool, an outside area with gardens for the warmer months, outdoor rooftop hot tub with views over grounds, experiential showers and a rooftop enclosed area with sofas, comfy chairs and recliners for relaxing.

We had lunch in the Spa Lounge, which was delicious and fresh and the staff were excellent – nothing was too much trouble and they were very accommodating.  It didn’t feel at all odd to be eating in robes!! It managed to combine a feeling of relaxed informality with delicious indulgence.
We loved the hydrotherapy pool and the fact the sun was streaming in through the huge windows made it all the  better.
We each had a hot stones massage – something not experienced before – and it was superb. The therapist was knowledgeable and friendly and asked for our preference for essential oil before beginning. The hot stones were just that! But they felt wonderful on the tighter areas of my back and I felt so much tension being released. Plus the treatment rooms smell divine!
After our treatments, we retired to the Relaxation room to do just that. Huge beds and sofas with matching throws and iced water on tap, it was the perfect end to a wonderful day.

The Spa offers everything from straightforward massages to more advanced treatments plus treatments for men, special occasion make-up and uses and sells a range of Espa skincare products.

Highly recommended!
