Winter holidays are a popular choice with one in five people planning to take a winter holiday this year and another one in five thinking about it, says ABTA.

Whether you fancy a city break, going off piste or getting some sun, Daisy Parker from ABTA - The Travel Association shares her top tips for getting away for less:

1. Consider a package

If you want to maximise a short break, picking a package can be the easiest way to make sure you get everything booked at the price you want.

2. Be flexible

If you don’t mind when and where you go then more options will be available to you. If you can, avoid travelling at peak periods, flights and holidays may be cheaper.

3. Take cover!

If you’re planning a winter break in addition to a summer holiday, then an annual travel insurance policy is probably the most cost-effective way to make sure you’re insured. If you’re planning on doing any winter sports such as skiing you’ll need to make sure that these are covered by your policy.

4. Bargain breaks

You don’t need to travel too far for the sun, Southern Spain, The Canary Islands and Egypt are all good-value choices. But if you want to travel further afield the exchange rate in South Africa is very favourable and you won’t get jet lag!

5. City savers

A winter city break can be great value, spending your days walking around and enjoying free attractions can really keep costs down, just remember to wrap up warm if you need to. Also most will be less crowded with shorter queues for museums and top attractions and it will be easier to get a table popular haunts. Spanish and Portuguese cities can be great value at the moment because of the favourable exchange rate - Bilbao, Valencia and Malaga in Spain and Lisbon and Porto in Portugal. Or try Istanbul or Eastern European cities such as Warsaw or Vilnus.

6. Slope off

Save on skiing breaks by choosing less well known ski resorts as they will often be cheaper; Eastern Europe has some amazing facilities at low prices, so think Slovenia, Serbia, Poland and Bulgaria and closer to home Andorra. Skiers can also pre-book their equipment with most travel agents or tour operators so there are no surprise costs when they get there.
