Reader Pamela Walker (59) tells us what she loves about her favourite town in Northumberland
There’s lots for foodies to enjoy…
Alnwick is famous for its pleasure gardens but it has so much more to offer. I love the fact that it promotes local produce and I enjoy browsing the independent shops for something different. I recommend Grannies Tearoom and Delicatessen on Narrowgate, which is brimming with locally-produced food and unique Northumbrian dishes created from a mix of English and Scottish recipes. I love its Border Tart, which is full of dried fruit and almonds. The Art House at Bondgate Within has a lovely restaurant which serves delicious flatbreads, as well as a small gallery displaying work by local artists. In fine weather, you can dine in the enclosed courtyard.

For a decent cup of tea…
Head to the Bari Tea Brewery – Bari means ‘lovely’ in Northumbrian, and this hidden gem certainly is. There is always a warm welcome from staff who serve perfectly brewed loose tea from a choice of 30 blends and homemade scones with Northumbrian cream. Or try a light lunch of soup with locally baked artisan bread.

The Linen Cupboard on Narrowgate specialises in pretty vintage and handmade products including crafts, furniture, fabrics, ornaments and
upcycled items. Craft fans will love the small haberdashery and craft shop in The Shambles overlooking Market Square, too.

Take a stroll
Among Alnwick’s many walks my favourite begins just footsteps from the castle. Cross the Lion Bridge and open the wooden gate; the path meanders along the river Aln where birds and wildlife can be spotted and the castle views are truly magnificent.
A good read
My day usually ends with a trip to Barter Books at Station Rise, an enormous secondhand bookshop housed in the elegant former railway station. Its lovely reading area has a roaring open fire and comfy armchairs. There’s even a tea trolley with Northumbrian biscuits, drinks and an honesty box!

The Chocolate Spa on Fenkle Street which sells beautiful handmade chocolates and drinking chocolate – perfect on a cold day! Make sure to try the salted truffles.
