What is attendance allowance?

This provides extra financial support for anyone who has a disability severe enough that you need someone to help look after you.

Am I eligible to claim attendance allowance?

This allowance is only available to those 65 and over with a physical or mental disability who have needed help for the past six months. You must also be in the UK (for at least 2 years) and be a resident.

What if I live in a care home?

You won’t be able to claim attendance allowance if you live in a care home unless you pay for your own care costs. In this case, you are eligible to reply.

What help could I get?

You could get either £55.65 and £83.10 per week to you to help you out. This depends on how much care you need. If you need frequent care through the day and night, you will most likely be eligible for the lower rate. If you need help and supervision throughout the day and night or if you are terminally ill, you may be granted the higher rate.

How do I apply?

You will need to fill out an attendance allowance claim form. You can find the form at and apply by post by sending your application to:

Attendance Allowance Unit
Mail Handling Site A
WV98 2AD

You can also get a copy of the form by calling the attendance allowance helpline on Telephone: 0800 731 0122

If you struggle to use the telephone and cannot apply via post, you can try using the Next Generation Text Service. Find out more information about this service here: You can also try the British Sign Language Video relay service:

For more advice on ways to apply including braille, large print and audio CD’s, try calling the attendance allowance helpline on 08007310122.

What if I am terminally ill?

If you are not expected to live more than 6 months, you must still complete the attendance allowance form but then ask your doctor for form DS1500. They will either fill it in for you to send off to the DWP or they will send it themselves.
