What our tester thought...
I've always had a love-hate relationship with Satnavs. On the one hand, I have the sense of direction of a piece of bread; on the other hand, they can be notoriously unreliable. On one memorable occasion mine cut out during a drive in the middle of nowhere - so I just drove straight on for an hour until it found its bearings again. That was a long day.
Anyway, the beauty of the new TomTom GO 5100 is that you get lifetime updates on all of your maps, meaning as long as you plug it in often enough, you'll never have that problem - hurrah!
I found it really easy to use and set up - although one word of warning, it takes a good couple of hours to update the first time, so do it well in advance of having to leave the house - and very straightforward to use on the go. It's solidly built and feels pleasingly robust.
En route it bleeps to remind you when speed cameras are coming up and, even more usefully, lets you know the speed limit of any given road.
It stuck easily to the windscreen, charged itself via te cigarette lighter and the display was simple to follow. Halfway through my journey it suggested a shorter route - which I accepted - and we got there in no time.
It's pricey at £259.99 but when you consider you won't need to buy another model again, it's really rather good value for the geographically-challenged like me.
