What they say…
The essence of a five star hotel distilled into a modest restaurant with rooms.
What our tester thought…
The break at The Horseshoe included a two night stay with bed, breakfast and dinner. We were greeted at Edinburgh train station by a member of The Horseshoe staff who was ready to take us to our destination by chauffeur driven car.
After travelling for the most of the day we were pleased to be offered tea and cake on arrival. The ginger cake was the best I have ever tasted!
We were talked through the details of our stay by Mark, and he gave us a brief history of The Horseshoe. We settled into our rooms where our luggage had been kindly delivered - the rooms were perfect with a lovely en suite bathroom. We had a range of drinks with a kettle and fresh milk and another slice of cake (fruitcake this time).
During the afternoon we decided to take the local bus into Peebles, the neighbouring town. Peebles had a real community feel about it and was filled with lovely shops ranging from old sweet shops to gift shops.
We then headed back to The Horseshoe to get ready for pre dinner drinks. These were served in a cosy candlelit atmosphere. There were a huge selection of drinks on offer, and we settled for a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The for dinner, we were given the choice of three menus: Menu of the day, A la Carte or the Taster Menu. We were very pleased with our choices: haggis, grouse, veal, lamb, a chocolate bar dessert and cheese selection…the poppyseed crackers were delicious!
The food was exceptional, every course had been put together with such detail. All produce is sourced locally and the carrots and chard from my main course were picked from The Horseshoe's garden.
Our drinks were constantly topped up and nothing was too much trouble. The service and food was second to none.
After one of the best night's sleep we've had in a while, we headed to the restaurant for breakfast. Freshly squeezed orange juice and tea/coffee were accompanied by an amazing selection of granola, porridge, fruits, yoghurt and freshly cooked to order breakfasts.
For our second day in Edinburgh we decided to catch the bus into the city centre and do a spot of retail therapy. The staff were again very helpful and helped us with where to get the bus and what time. It took 30 minutes into the centre and it was a picturesque journey.
After a tiring day shopping we looked forward to our dinner. We weren't disappointed and dinner was as exceptional as our first evening. We settled down to sleep feeling suitably stuffed to the brim and having thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
After breakfast - where the chef Alistar had packaged me up a doggy bag of the granola, as I raved about it that much - we left for the train station feeling overwhelmed by our stay, the whole experience at the Horseshoe was exceptional. We will definitely be visiting again. To have such friendly, helpful staff on top of everything else they had to offer made our trip all the more pleasant.
