‘A horse a horse, my kingdom for a horse…’ This was very much how we felt on our trip to Shakespeare Country during the June heatwave… but substitute Richard III's ‘horse’ for ‘a cold bottle of water’!

There’s nothing quite like the British summer once it really gets going, but it can make a weekend away quite a challenge; you want to make the most of your break but not get overheated.

This was why we chose to get away from the crowds where we could still make the most of a picture-perfect part of England. We stayed at Q Hotels’ Stratford Manor, near Stratford upon Avon, but instead of heading into the town we chose to explore the area around the Bard’s famous birthplace.

Car air-conditioning cranked up to full blast, we drove to nearby Charlecote Park,  a grand 16th-Century country house, for a lovely afternoon exploring the house and grounds (with a stop for a well-deserved ice-cream) before checking into the hotel.

The reception was thankfully cooler than outside and we were soon on our way up to our recently refurbished room. It was a bit unlucky that we'd arrived on the hottest day of the year as there was no air-conditioning, but a fan was provided. The bathroom was large and very clean - always the most important thing about any hotel stay! In-room extras (toiletries, tea, coffee) were basic, but you can pay for an upgraded room with a bit more luxury and a wider selection of items.

We paid a visit to the Leisure Club spa for treatments in a couples' room - I had a vigorous Swedish massage and my boyfriend a Fit for Business treatment, which left us both extremely relaxed! On the downside, the spa reception area is quite small and became crowded quite quickly; it would benefit from a pre-massage designated relaxation room for guests, just to make the experience a bit more special, but they are restricted by space.

We enjoyed relaxing in the air-conditioned bar area before heading into the restaurant for a tasty three-course dinner. The service in the restaurant was excellent, nothing was too much trouble - and was followed by a very comfortable night's sleep, despite the heat!
