What they say...
According to their website this Hallmark Hotel is a ‘striking example of neoclassical architecture, the hotel opened in 1928 to serve passengers flying in and out of Croydon Aerodrome (then London’s main airport) and the evidence of this are in the many paintings put up throughout the hotel itself.
The hotel is well situated, being only 15 minutes from London and close to the M25 which was handy. It's good for anyone wanting to explore the centre of London allowing quick access without the hustle and bustle of staying in the capital itself.
When we arrived we were impressed with the exterior of the hotel. Although it was situated in a fairly modern part of Croydon it had a ‘nostalgia-grandeur’ feel. The interior is modern but warm and the staff are all very polite and helpful.
Our room was an Executive Double Room, which I recommend if you can afford it and was very comfortable with all the modern amenities we’d expect from a 4* hotel.
The lift to our top floor room (third floor) was broken when we arrived but we were assured that it would be fixed shortly. Funnily enough, it proved less of an inconvenience then one might have expected, as it meant that we could take time to examine all the interesting paintings/photographs hanging on the walls. They really helped us understand the history and relevance of the hotel, which made the stay more enjoyable.
Whilst breakfast was lovely, we found the bar and brasserie a little disappointing based on price and the standard of the dishes we ordered, so we would find it hard to recommend them when there are other options so close to the hotel.
In summary, the hotel appeals for its rich nostalgia feel, friendly staff and easy access to London Central but for a 4* hotel, the bar area and brasserie were found wanting.
