What our reviewer thought…
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always dreaded the thought of going to salons – forever worrying that I’d come out looking worse than I did going in. And as someone mixed race, it’s often been a struggle finding a hairdresser in my city who is confident and capable of working with my hair type. But after years of disappointing salon appointments, I recently discovered Pkai Hair. Not only do they work with a variety of hair types, but they have at least one stylist in each of their three salons who can work with curly and afro hair. So when an opportunity to visit arose, I simply couldn’t turn it down.
With it being Christmas time – and party season – I wanted to treat myself to the full-works. So I opted for a full head of highlights, treatment and a cut and finish. I popped into the salon couple of days prior to my appointment for a consultation and a skin test with my hair stylist, Holly. To begin with, I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted. So we looked at the colour chart and discussed which colours we thought would work best with my hair and skin tone. To help my curls pop, we decided on a mix of honey and coppery-brown tones. I’d never experienced this pre-appointment consultation at other salons before – having previously felt pressured into making a quick on-the-spot decision that I wasn’t completely confident or happy with. So this felt like a real treat and I left feeling confident and excited for my new hairdo.
With December being a manic month, it was lovely be able to take the time out and treat myself to some guilt-free ‘me’ time with no distractions. On my arrival, I received a warm welcome and was waited on hand and foot from the moment I stepped inside. The salon was dressed in festive decorations with jingles playing in the background. The interior itself was very contemporary, with a red theme throughout, furnished with comfortable chairs and big wide mirrors and all of the high-tech salon gadgets you’d expect.
Having tight curls, I often find myself squirming as my hair is brushed and sectioned for my highlights. But my stylist was so patient and gentle that I could barely feel a thing. Working from the bottom to the top, I had three different colours weaved into my hair using foils. My hair is naturally dry and frizzy – and dying it can sometimes make it even worse – so I had a Wellaplex treatment to give it a much-needed moisture boost (as well as a head massage that was so relaxing it almost sent me to sleep). After a trim and style, my hair looked, felt and smelled gorgeous. The highlights complimented my natural hair colour and lifted my previously dull hair, giving my curls more body and definition. The outcome was even better than I had originally envisaged.
Overall verdict: When it comes to hair salons, you typically get for what you pay for. But Pkai salons are an exception to the rule – offering a VIP experience at very competitive prices. My hair is big part of my personality, so I really have trust someone before letting them loose on it. And I can safely say that Pkai Hair will be seeing my face – and hair – again soon.
