What our tester said:
The first thing that stuck me when I took the NOOK out of the box was how incredibly small and light it is. Weighing in at 175g (6oz) it's even lighter than a small paperback which, as I have arthritis in my hands and wrists, was really welcome. It's a very comfortable size to hold with a soft touch, matt finish. It also feels solid and durable – it would definitely survive being shoved in the bottom of your handbag.
I found the type really clear and easy on the eyes against a soft grey background. But if it's not ideal for you a simple touch-screen menu allows you to easily change the size of the text, line spacing and margins until you have a perfectly customised reading experience – which you can't do with a print book!
Navigating through the book is easy too – simply tap the right-hand side of the screen to turn the page (or tap on the left to turn back). Hold your finger on the screen for a few seconds and a menu pops up that allows you to turn to a contents page, search for a specific word or phrase, or jump to a particular page number.
I love the fact that when you switch the NOOK on it remembers the last page you were reading – so even if you fall asleep holding it (which I did) there's no more fumbling around for lost bookmarks.
The GlowLight is designed to help you carry on reading in lower light (if you're trying not to wake your sleeping partner for example). Although useful I found it was a bit glaring and tiring on the eyes and much prefered the reading experience with the light off.
Searching for and downloading books was very simple (once you've managed to connect to a wi-fi account) and the touch screen keyboard works well. The battery life is amazing – I've had the NOOK for three weeks now and it's still more than half charged.
My only criticism is that the interface is a bit 'clunky'. To transition between pages the screen goes black for a fraction of a second before generating the new page – not a big problem I just found it a bit frustrating. But overall I'd say this is a great buy.
