After schlepping round the shops it’s so much nicer to be able to stay overnight and make a weekend of it.
I took my granddaughter on a very special weekend to visit all her favourite shops and to see the famous Christmas lights. We stayed at the Lancaster London, where we had the West End, Marble Arch and the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park right on our doorstep.
The hotel overlooks the park, but from our 18th floor room we could see right across London. My granddaughter was literally speechless – which doesn't happen often! The huge picture windows gave us a view of the city of London, with the iconic Shard, the Millennium wheel and the Post Office tower, which I remember visiting years ago. We could also see the rides and attractions of the Winter Wonderland, which we couldn’t wait to visit.
We stayed in an Executive Club room with two very comfy beds. All rooms are fully equipped with modern facilities such as air-conditioning, satellite television, mini bars, en-suite bathrooms and power showers.
We shopped til we dropped, then walked back to the hotel, which is about 10 minutes by foot from Oxford Street, or you can catch a tube from Oxford Circus to Lancaster Gate station, two minutes away form the hotel – ideal if you have lots of bags to carry! There are also buses every five minutes.
After all that shopping I was very much looking forward to eating in one of the hotel’s restaurants. We chose the award-winning Nipa Thai, which has received the prestigious “Thai Select” award from the Thai Government for its authentic cuisine with dishes created by an all-female kitchen staff.
We enjoyed a selection of starters, including chicken satay with a delicious peanut sauce and crispy fried prawn dumplings, followed by sweet and sour chicken and stir fry rice noodles with chicken and Oriental greens. Emily had never had Thai before, but none of the dishes proved too spicy for her, which was a relief. There is plenty to choose from, however, if you have a more adventurous pallete.
After dinner, we had an orange juice in the luxurious The Lounge Bar, which I noticed has a great selection of cocktails – I almost felt I’d seen Tom Cruise mixing them!
On Sunday morning we headed down to the Christmas Fayre which the hotel was hosting. It had perfect stocking fillers and made us feel really Christmassy.
The perfect Christmas weekend and we returned home feeling we’d really had a special treat.
