K West Hotel & Spa is located on a quiet street in Shepherd's Bush, but just 3 minutes away is one of the biggest shopping centres in Europe, Westfield. Hop on the Tube (on the centre’s doorstep) and you can be in the West End with all its theatres and attractions in 15 minutes.
If you’re planning a weekend of shopping and a show, K West is for you. Shepherd’s Bush is the home of the BBC, and the hotel is actually situated in the former BBC building Kensington House, where, in the Sixties, an endless list of Rock ‘N’ Roll royalty stayed, played and misbehaved!
The likes of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Bowie, The Kinks and Roxy Music recorded for the BBC here, and today’s hotel is an homage to this musical heritage.
Since becoming a hotel, the venue has continued to strike a chord with musicians, who often stay while playing at nearby music venues O2 Shepherds Bush Empire and the Apollo.
Our first glimpse into the hotel’s links to the music industry came when we first arrived at check-in – the reception was full of musical instruments and some very cool-looking American musicians!
We stayed in an Executive Twin which had a very special feature – an Ipad and smartphone with 4G for guests’ use – and it was available in all the bedrooms in the hotel, including standard. The room itself was spacious with a large bathroom and powerful shower. A nice touch was a plate of chocolate brownies and macarons for us to enjoy on our arrival – very welcome after a long journey.
Traditional Afternoon Tea has been given a glam-rock makeover at K West – guests can swap traditional hot drinks for tea-infused cocktails, and even enjoy the treat late at night like a true rockstar from 10pm-1am. Cake at midnight? We like that idea!
The tea is served on vintage record covers, with electric blue and pink teapots and teacups, adding some glam to the rock in the chic and newly refurbished Studio Bar & Kitchen, which has also been designed to reflect the hotel’s rich music heritage.
The hotel underwent an interior redesign in November 2014 including the spa, so we were keen to see the facilities on offer.
Spa facilities in city hotels can be variable, as there simply isn’t the space compared to what’s available at some of the larger countryside hotels. But at K West they have created a wonderful underground spa with a large hydrotherapy pool, a ‘Sun Meadow’ which has specialist light therapy to help treat SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and incredibly, a Snow Paradise room which was filled with, well, snow! This facility, which mimics the Finnish experience of alternating between freezing and steamy environments, is the first of its kind in London. There’s also a sanarium, sauna, dry flotation tank, aromatic herbal steam room and gym.
Unsurprisingly, given what’s offered, K West was awarded ‘Best Spa in London’ at the Good Spa Guide Awards.
