Sad to say, I am one of those people who love cleaning, particularly if I have some decent products to clean with. I get a real sense of satisfaction. Even better, if I have some new-to-me products to try out, I see it as a welcome challenge!

Last December I had a new kitchen fitted after years of putting up with an old, shabby one. Anyone who’s had the luxury of a new kitchen will know that you take a delight in keeping it clean. However, I retained some of my original appliances (microwave, kettle, toaster) that all looked a bit dull and I was considering replacing them. However, they were the perfect guinea pigs for me to try out the Astonish Pro cleaning range…

Astonish Pro Hob Shine and Sparkle, 550ml, rrp £2.99

What it says it does:

  • Specially developed for use on ceramic hobs, glass halogen hobs, microwaves
  • Easy to use squeezy bottles and no mess cap
  • For a penetrating clean, leaving a beautiful shine that conditions the surface
  • Comes in a silver 550ml bottle
  • Cleans, polishes and protects.

My kitchen may be only a few months old but already the hob has taken a beating. It’s a glass-top halogen model and each time I cook, something gets spilled on there or is burnt on. I do my best to clean it regularly but it doesn’t get back to that newly-installed look.

I used the Astonish Pro Hob cleaner and was absolutely blown away by the results. It’s a thick cream with a slight abrasive action and it made really light work of removing marks and burnt-on food. Applied using a clean, damp cloth, I didn’t have to scrub at all, the marks just lifted off. I was left with a sparkling hob that looked clean and sparkling but also felt  ‘glossy’ so it conditions it, too.

Astonish Pro Steel Shine and Sparkle, 550ml, rrp £2.99

  •  Comes in a silver 550ml bottle.

This is a cream formula that you apply with a clean damp cloth and work into the stainless steel using small circular movements. It removed all manner of sticky marks from my toaster – even gunk that had been melted on over time. Rinse it off with a clean damp cloth then buff to a shine. I used it on my kettle, toaster and microwave and they look like new! That means I can shelve my plan to buy new ones as I thought they were spoiling the look of my kitchen! Worth noting is the fact it leaves a grey residue on the cloth you use to clean it with, so it may be worth keeping a separate cloth  just for this purpose.

Astonish Pro Granite, 235ml, rrp £2.99

What it says it does:

  • For use on sealed granite & marble surfaces
  • This is a non-abrasive, non-acidic product specially formulated to clean sealed marble and granite
  • Leaves surfaces superbly polished and streak free
  •  Comes in a neat 235ml bottle with a flip lid.

This is specially designed for marble and granite so I had to move out of the comfort of my kitchen and into the lounge where, ashamed to say, I have a much-neglected marble hearth. Usually this just gets a wash with a wet, soapy cloth once in a while as it’s quite old and I inherited it with the house. This time I washed it, dried it, then applied the granite cleaner. It’s a slightly oily liquid that needs to be applied in small patches and worked into the marble. It took some time to cover such a large area but I kept at it and was duly rewarded with a much-improved hearth. I reckon it will need a few more attempts to really bring it up to scratch so a few more coats may be on the cards.

Pro Multi-Use Cleaning Paste, 500g, rrp £3.99

What it says it does:

  • Effective antibacterial cleaning for all around your home
  • Professionally formulated, multi-use cleaning paste with a powerful antibacterial agent.
  • Kills all common household germs, including E.coli, salmonella and listeria
  • Though tough on stains and germs, there is no need to wear gloves or protect against hazardous fumes.  The gentle, yet effective formula contains no harmful odours or ingredients and is not tested on animals
  • With essential oils of tea tree and eucalyptus

I decided to move outside the house to test this one as it says on the pack it’s suitable for cleaning UPVC. Standing on my patio, I surveyed my south-facing patio doors, stained and weathered over the years, with a distinct green tinge caused by a build-up of moss-like material. I was a bit dubious as to the power of this paste but I was pleasantly surprised! Applied using a wet cloth, it cut through all the accumulated grime and dried-on moss easily. It needed a bit of elbow grease, but it was well worth it for the results. I did all of the outside sills with it then began searching round for more to do!

It says there is no need to wear gloves or protect against hazardous fumes when using as its “gentle, yet effective formula contains no harmful odours or ingredients and is not tested on animals”. Mmmm, not sure about that; I always wear gloves as I think any cleaning product is probably not that good for your skin, but it’s good to know nonetheless.

This Pro range is an absolute bargain for the money, providing real cleaning solutions with little mess, effort or, more importantly, smell. Some of the more potent products on the market can leave you gasping for breath when you use them, but not this lot. They give fantastic results and will make your home shine like a showhome!
