Where is it?

Luton Hoo is an English country house and estate between the towns of Luton, Bedfordshire and Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Although set in acres of parkland it is just a 5 minute drive from Luton Airport parkway train station.

What our reviewer said:

“The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh spent part of their honeymoon in one of the vast estate bedrooms at this magnificent mansion in 1947. They loved it so much they often returned to celebrate their anniversary.

Luckily you don’t need to be royalty to enjoy the charms of Luton Hoo today. The first glimpse modern day visitors get of this royal estate is through the grand gates and tree-lined driveway. This is a particularly beautiful sight in autumn when the fallen leaves create a carpet of gold that leads right up to the doors of the grand mansion.

Once arrived there’s a very unique and very British way of travelling around the estate- via a traditional black cab! Cabbies are on hand at all times to ferry guests to and from the brasserie, spa and country club.

Afternoon tea in one of the period lounges or drawing rooms, under the gleaming chandeliers and incredibly high ceilings is a must! Delicate sandwiches, cakes and scones are served with a choice of blended teas from different parts of the world. This experience doesn’t cost a fortune either, in fact at £27.50 per person it’s very reasonable.

When walking around the rest of the house it often feels like you’re in an episode of Downton Abbey. The historic artwork, roaring fireplaces, extremely grand staircase and attentive staff transport you into a real-life period drama.

The extensive grounds are definitely worth a visit, as they were designed by one of England’s greatest landscape designers, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. He took on the landscaping of Luton Hoo and its estate as a landmark project and many of his original 18th century designs can be seen on the estate.  Luton Hoo also features a topiary garden, walled garden, 17th century sunken rockery, herb garden and a vast woodland where a spectacular sea of bluebells emerges in spring."

  • The spa features a pool, gym, sauna and steam room with treatments starting from £40.
  • Other facilities include an 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, conference facilities, tennis courts, and a clay pigeon shooting school.
