A very comfortable weekend in Oxford - at the Premier Inn

Because Oxford is such a draw for tourists, it's no surprise that accommodation tends to be on the pricey side.

To see if it's possible to have a great weekend away on a budget in this lovely city, we thought we’d give a ‘value’ hotel a go. We chose the Premier Inn, which is south of the city but within easy reach of the centre.

Budget hotels are meant to be cheap and cheerful, but these days we do have certain expectations, no matter how little we’ve paid! Could Premier Inn live up to its promise of a great night’s sleep? Read on to find out…

Our first impression was that nothing would be too much trouble – and the welcome we received after a difficult journey was such a relief!

Our room was in the new annexe building close by. Unlike some hotels, there was a lift to take us to the 2nd floor. The room itself was roomy and, most importantly, very clean and well maintained. On what was a very hot day, it was cooled by quiet air-conditioning but there was also a window that could be opened, something I was very pleased to see.

Best of all was the bed – exactly as promised it was large and comfortable; we slept like logs! We have had poorer sleep experiences in several (much) more expensive hotels. This Premier Inn was close to the ring road which though convenient could have meant a noisy night, but we didn’t hear a thing.

Breakfast was served in the Beefeater restaurant in the main building and although busy with a few large parties, the staff were very accommodating and the food hot and tasty. The only negative point was the coffee – as they have a Costa machine it would’ve been good to have the option of a freshly made cappuccino. The self-service coffee was served in large vats and tasted as though it had been standing a long time. However we could see how this would be a more practical way of serving large numbers of guests.

All in all, we had an excellent stay and would definitely opt for Premier Inn on future weekends away. Our break was £100, but much cheaper rooms are available nationwide.
